Before there was a modern pharmacopoeia of recreational drugs, humankind used plant-sourced anticholinergic substances for both spiritual and recreational purposes. From the human-looking root that grows from the blood of murderers hanged at the gallows to a innocuous-looking plant that causes nightmare-like hallucinations that the Kammasutra suggests to men to rub on the penis before sex to force his lover to do his bidding, getting high on these plants is interwoven in the fabric of the story of humankind.A Field Guide To Deliriants is an essential tool for budding psychonauts by providing information on many anticholinergic deliriant drugs (belladonna, benzydamine, brugmansia, datura, diphenhydramine, henbane, mandrake, nutmeg, and scopolamine) such as their history, recipes, dosage range, sourcing, trip reports, culture surrounding, and extraction methods.

In 1929, Charles Upson Clark (1875-1960), a history Professor at Columbia University carrying out bibliographic research on the early history of the Americas in the Vatican Library, came across a remarkable illustrated Latin manuscript entitled Libellus de Medicinalibus Indorum Herbis (Little Book of Indian Medicinal Herbs) completed in 1552. The manuscript now known as the Codex Cruz-Badianus (CCB) contained 185 illustrations (phytomorphs) of plants with text that described their medicinal uses. This manuscript spread new light on botanical and medicinal knowledge of the indigenous peoples of Mexico known today as the Nahuas or Aztecs. It was to have major repercussions on our knowledge of Aztec culture and the history of New Spain in the 16th century. CCB was produced at the Colegio of Imperial de Santa Cruz at Tlatelolco established in 1536 to train sons of the Aztec nobility for the clergy. The authors were two indigenous faculty members, Martin (Martinus in Latin) de la Cruz and Juan Badiano (Juannes Badianus in Latin) whose Spanish names were conferred upon their baptism. Martin de la Cruz was the Colegio’s indigenous doctor who gave instruction in medicine and Juan Badiano, a Latin teacher and former student translated the book into Latin. The herbal dedicated to the Viceroy Francisco de Mendoza was sent to Spain as a gift to King Carlos I soon after its completion in 1552. The original ended up in the Vatican Library until 1990 when John Paul II returned it to Mexico. In 1931, the Mayanist scholar, William Gates, and the biologist Emily Walcott Emmart became aware of the manuscript and independently translated it to English. In 2009, Martin Clayton, Luigi Guerrini, and Alejandro de Avila identified plants of the CCB based on Emmart’s book and a 17th century copy found in the Windsor library. Of the 185 phytomophs, Gates identified 85 on the generic level, Emmart 9, and Clayton et al. 126. However most of these identifications disagree. In the present work, 183 of 185 phytomorphs are systematically re-evaluated and identified on the generic, as well as specific level, along with their botanical descriptions, previous identifications, putative identification, distribution, names, and uses.

This third edition of the Handbook of Poisonous and Injurious Plants is designed to assist the clinician in the initial response to the needs of a child or adult exposed to a poisonous or injurious plant. It highlights common and important plants that lead to the adverse effects upon exposure, and it describes the mechanisms of action of the implicated toxin, clinical manifestations, and specific therapeutics, as available, for each. This truly comprehensive resource is botanically rigorous with insights from both the pharmacognosy and medical literature. At the same time, it is also for those who are interested in growing and enjoying the plants in their environment, filling in a not-often-discussed botanical and horticultural niche that goes beyond their beautiful physical appearance. Plants contain many useful chemicals that humans have used for millennia as botanical curatives. This book will help the reader understand the fine balance between a medication and a poison, why plants contain these natural substances, and their impact on the human body. With its thorough references and full-color photos of hundreds of potentially toxic and injurious plants inside and outside the home, this book is useful for identifying and addressing concerns about cultivated species and those found in the wild. This book will be of interest to botanists, horticulturists, clinicians, and naturalists as well as hikers, gardeners, and all those who simply enjoy the wonders of nature and the great outdoors.

In The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants Christian Rätsch details the botany, history, distribution, cultivation, and preparation and dosage of more than 400 psychoactive plants. He discusses their ritual and medicinal usage, cultural artifacts made from these plants, and works of art that either represent or have been inspired by them. The author begins with 168 of the most well-known psychoactives--such as cannabis, datura, and papaver--then presents 133 lesser known substances as well as additional plants known as “legal highs,” plants known only from mythological contexts and literature, and plant products that include substances such as ayahuasca, incense, and soma. The text is lavishly illustrated with 797 color photographs--many of which are from the author’s extensive fieldwork around the world--showing the people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the world’s sacred psychoactives.

The Psychopharmacology Of Herbal Medicine written by Marcello Spinella and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-06-08 with Medical categories.

A compilation of current scientific knowledge about psychoactive herbal drugs. Virtually all cultures consume drugs from psychoactive plants. Caffeine, for example, is probably the most common stimulant in the world, and many modern medicines, such as morphine and codeine, are derived from plant sources. In these cases, scientific research has revealed the composition of the plants and how they interact with the nervous system. There are also many herbal medications with reputed therapeutic value that have not yet gained acceptance into mainstream medicine, partly because there has not been enough research to support their usefulness. Instead they are regarded as "alternative medicines." This is an active research area, however, and many current studies are focusing on identifying the active components, pharmacological properties, physiological effects, and clinical efficacy of herbal medicines. This book compiles and integrates the most up-to-date information on the major psychoactive herbal medicines—that is, herbal medicines that alter mind, brain, and behavior. It focuses particularly on the effects on various areas of cognition, including attention, learning, and memory. The book covers all major classes of psychoactive drugs, including stimulants, cognitive enhancers, sedatives and anxiolytics, psychotherapeutic herbs, analgesics and anesthetic plants, hallucinogens, and cannabis.

Psychedelic Shamanic Magick written by Kenny Berman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-06 with categories.

While maintaining an intimate link with the reader, the author Kenny Berman describes a practical shamanic method for applying sacred visionary plants for healing and transformational purposes. The ancient methods taught within are techniques he learned from the plants in the same manner as the shamans receive their knowledge. These methods were later refined and elaborated upon through his experiences working with mestizo curanderos in the Ucayali region of the Peruvian Amazon and other curanderos in Chiapis, Mexico in the 1990's. The book documents shamanic techniques for applying sacred visionary plants, namely: ayahuasca, Psilocybe mushrooms, Iboga, Salvia divinorum, peyote, San Pedro and others in a prescribed ritual manner. It begins by stating the philosophy of Psychedelic Shamanic Magick and then continues to describe all the shamanic tools (smoke, feathers, voice, scent, percussion, color, stones and more.) that are used in conjunction with willpower for creating a lasting change or to reveal transformative information. It ties all of this together into a complete ritual process beginning with the collection of the plants and culminating in the final procedure of consuming a sacred visionary plant in ceremony.
