Di Dante, come di tanti altri scrittori, Borges si è dimostrato capace di dirci ciò che altrove non troveremmo, ma soprattutto di dircelo a partire da presupposti e angolature a lui solo accessibili. Orientata – come accenna il Prologo – da una sorta di «innocenza», la sua lettura della "Commedia" («il miglior libro scritto dagli uomini») muove infatti da dettagli, suggestioni, spunti immaginativi per proporre, attraverso molteplici riferimenti letterari, congetture spesso eccentriche e punti di vista esclusivi e personali. In queste pagine, degne dei migliori saggi di "Altre inquisizioni", Borges intravede nell’ultimo viaggio di Ulisse «un occulto e intricato suicidio» simile a quello del capitano Ahab di "Moby Dick"; scopre nella "Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum" di Beda il Venerabile visioni anticipatrici della "Commedia", e nell’Aquila splendente del diciottesimo canto del Paradiso affinità col Simurg persiano; riflette sulla contraddittoria compassione di Dante per Francesca, e la spiega evocando il Raskol’nikov di "Delitto e castigo" e il grande e sfortunato amore per Beatrice, motivo nel quale riconosce la vera genesi dell’opera: «Morta Beatrice, perduta per sempre Beatrice, Dante giocò con la finzione di ritrovarla, per mitigare la tristezza; io personalmente penso che abbia edificato la triplice architettura del suo poema per introdurvi quell’incontro». In questo volume, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1982, Borges radunò scritti per lo più apparsi in giornali e riviste sul finire degli anni Quaranta; viene qui aggiunto nell’Appendice il testo di una conferenza sulla "Divina Commedia" tenuta nel 1977 al Teatro Coliseo di Buenos Aires.
