Excerpt from Storia della Letteratura Italiana: IL Seicento Il Manzoni ha notato, quasi un'eccezione del secolo XVII, la saggia dispo zione per la quale si doveva dischiudere a tutti i'ambrosiana e somministrare agli studiosi il bisognevole per trarne gli appunti da' libri. A onore del vero e giusto ricordare che altrettanto si fece contemporaneamente anche da' Granduchi di To scana. A Firenze, come a Milano, i codici della Laurenziana si concedevano u gualmente agli studi degli eruditi. E dischiusa ugualmente agli uomini di scienze e di lettere erano la libreria granducale fondata nel secolo XVII, e la ricca col lezione di Padri della Chiesa di Cosimo III. Ne meno degna di memoria e la bi blioteca che raccoglieva co' suoi risparmi e donava alla citta di Firenze Antonio Magliabecchi. La sua memoria vive sopra tutto per essa, che arricchita col pro ceder degli anni dal Comune si chiamo sino a tempi non molto remoti la Ma gliabecchiana. Cio che dal Magliabeccbi in Firenze, fu fatto in Roma da Angelo da Roc cacontrata, agostiniano, e dal cardinale Girolamo Casanate di Napoli. Il primo de' due dono a' monaci del suo Ordine la preziosa libreria, che poi fu detta l'an gelica; l'altro lego, provveduta della rendita di quattromila scudi, quella ricchis sima biblioteca che continua a chiamarsi la Casanatense. 'i'ra' patti imposti da entrambi fu prima la condizione che le biblioteche s' aprissero a comodo degli studiosi e del pubblico. E quel che s'e detto di Milano, di Padova, di Firenze e di Roma, e a ritenersi presso a poco della maggior parte delle altre citta d'ita lia. Chi si facesse a tesser la storia delle pubbliche biblioteche incontrerebbe, che le origini risalgono non solo al periodo del tempo che da' principi del secolo XVII si conduce a mezzo il successivo, ma che incominciano da lasciti per lo piu di privati.
