Célébrés pour leur traditionnelle pêche au filet d’épaule et pour leur économie égalitaire, les Imraguen ontils été épargnés par les grandes mutations sociales et démographiques (sécheresses, sédentarisation et croissance urbaine exponentielle) survenues en Mauritanie au cours des années 1970 et 1980 ? Le présent ouvrage tente de répondre à ces questions en examinant les formes et les mécanismes des transformations sociales vécues depuis quarante ans par cette petite communauté de pêcheurs nomades saisonniers, disséminée sur 200 kilomètres d’une côte saharienne des plus inhospitalières. Il dévoile la façon dont ces précieux pourvoyeurs de ressources alimentaires, partiellement intégrés au Parc national du Banc d’Arguin en 1976, ont dû simultanément adopter des logiques de pêche plus intensives, inféodées aux lois de l’économie de marché, et se soumettre à des injonctions de conservation de la nature de plus en plus lourdes. Cette enquête ethnographique et historique, prenant les techniques comme porte d’entrée, offre un éclairage nouveau sur ce groupe de pêcheurs singulier et sur les modalités (matérielles, sociales, identitaires...) selon lesquelles il a su négocier sa survie face aux incertitudes et contradictions du monde globalisé. Sébastien Boulay est anthropologue, maître de conférences à l’Université Paris Descartes (Faculté des sciences sociales de la Sorbonne) et membre du Centre population et développement (CEPED), UMR 196 UPD-INED-IRD.
