At the age of twenty-nine, Chris Geganto – who had been waking up at the crack of dawn each day to work a demanding job on a construction site – decided he needed to make a change in direction in his life. Growing up he was always infatuated with sailboats and the sea, so he proposed a plan to his wife, Margaret, to take a sabbatical and set sail to the Bahamas for the winter in search of something. What they found was adventure in the high seas, experiences that brought them closer together, and most importantly, who they really are.Getting Yourself Out There tells the story of how deciding to step away helps you gain new perspectives about yourself and move forward faster upon your return in the right direction. He helps to define the “why” behind stepping away from everything and taking a sabbatical earlier in your life instead of later. This story chronicles the adventures of buying a boat, quitting jobs, learning to sail, and finding paradise on a sailboat in the many islands of the Bahamas, before turning thirty. An inspiring story about a family deciding to make a change, Getting Yourself Out There is a wonderful example of how leaving everything behind for a year can teach you about who you really are and change your life forever.

For those who love sailing and you-are-there travel literature. Also for those who enjoy studying the life and times of the Apostle Paul. But definitely for those who love adventure, or at least reading about it! Seafaring isn't for the faint of heart. It wasn't for the Apostle Paul in the first century A.D.—shipwrecked, imprisoned, and often a stranger in foreign lands. And it turned out to be a heart-stopping task some two thousand years later, when a religion professor and his wife undertook a 14-month journey by sailboat! They stopped in eight countries, visiting every site where Paul stopped on his tumultuous missionary journeys. "Sailing Acts" traces this 21st-century voyage from Volos, Greece, to Rome, Italy, by car, by foot, by motorized scooter, but mostly on a 33-foot boat, logging more than 3600 nautical miles over two sailing seasons. "Explorers are easy to admire or despise, but very difficult to understand without going on the trip," writes Stutzman. "To really appreciate the experiences, the drama, and development of Paul the explorer, you need to sail with him." So begins Sailing Acts, inviting readers to come on board. Stutzman draws thoughtful comparisons from his own travel mishaps and adventures to the ones Paul experienced on his journeys. This book is in the tradition of Bruce Feiler's Walking the Bible. Stutzman's knowledge of the socio-political setting in the first-century Roman empire provides an informative backdrop to understanding Paul and reading his epistles in a new light. The book includes dozens of photos, maps showing the couple's travel routes, a list of all the repairs and replacements Stutzman made to the aging boat which he bought sight-unseen, and an itinerary of places they visited. So many people dream of it; so few end up taking it: an extended Sabbatical. What would it mean to you, if you could take six months unpaid leave and dedicate this time to traveling (with your family)? You might think that this is impossible, impractical or not worthwhile. You can remove all the hurdles, including - "I would never get approval from my manager," "I can't afford it," "It's the worst timing," "I can't pull my kids out of school," "People would say I'm crazy," "I wouldn't know what to do," and "I don't know where to start." Tomer Lanis, too, is confronted with all the paralyzing reasons not to go: jobs, kids at school, a mortgaged house, two cats, no time and no budget. Nevertheless, he decides with his wife to put their jobs on hold, pull their two kids out of school and go sailing together around the Caribbean for six months. After coming back, they make two eye-opening discoveries: first, they benefit individually and collectively as a family far beyond their wildest dreams. Second, they are not lucky or unique; anybody can do it. This riveting and inspiring account weaves the dreaming and planning phases along with the defining adventures of a priceless, unpaid leave. It leaves readers in awe and three steps closer to realizing their own dreams. The author courageously tackles common dilemmas and conflicts, drawing readers to pause for reflection on their own relationships and lives. A lot of people dream about it, but only a few set out to do it. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a sailing boat is an incredible adventure full of uncertainties and dangers, boat and crew entirely at the mercy of nature. Every year a few hundred yachts leave the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa to sail almost 3000 miles across the Atlantic as part of an international rally to the Caribbean. Journalist Carla and her family are part of that rally, on a one-year sabbatical, living the dream. They join the budding rally community in Las Palmas, meticulously prepare their boat, party and play, navigate across the big pond in often difficult, sometimes horrendous conditions, and, safely arrived, have time to explore the magical Caribbean with rally friends they have made for life. But Carla can be too curious for her own good sometimes...

About our Book Living the Dream is the true-life adventure story of our seven-year cruise from Newport, Oregon, to Phuket, Thailand in the 35-foot steel-hulled sailboat, Tainui. This book gives a true picture of what it’s really like for a retired couple to live their dream of full time cruising to far away places: the highs of beautiful sailing days, snorkeling off pristine coral, anchoring in tropical lagoons, exotic cultural experiences, and the fellowship of the cruising community--but also fear in storms, the exhaustion of sleepless night watches, discouragement of endless boat maintenance, and a rusting through of Tainui’s hull. Although we wrote Living the Dream for a general audience, serious sailors will find a wealth of helpful cruising information and steel boat owners will profit from our significant learning experiences in our maintenance of Tainui's steel hull. About us We began our lives far apart--Connie in parts of Californis that were far from the sea and with no aspirations to cross oceans and Vern in the busy seaport city of Seattle dreaming of sailing away some day. We eventually met at the University of Washington, married, started or family and careers--Vern as a social worker and Connie as a teacher. It was our four years of living with our family in Malaysia while Vern was on the staff of the Peace Corps there that sparked our desire to one day be full time world travelers.
