World War II helped to define Tristan Jones as an adventurous Welsh youth. After losing his parents, he spent much of his life working on sailing barges and so he is no stranger to the seas when he’s called to fight for Britain during the Blitz in 1940. Tristan Jones is not only caught in the middle of arduous battles on board, but also the tragic battles he must fight in his heart. When the British Royal Navy commissions him to embark on transatlantic duties on the HMS Eclectic, HMS Hood and the Bismarck, Jones learns the emotional trials a sailor must face. On land and at sea, Jones is a hero and describes his thrilling and often comic adventures in HEART OF OAK.

Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III 1845 - 1846 THE PASSAGE TO LIVERPOOL. -- JACK AFLOAT AND ASHORE In due course the "Ariel " completed her lading. A new crew was shipped, this time for the long voyage, fifteen months being the limit of time as written in the articles, and the last of December, 1845, the year of the great famine in Ireland, we sailed for Liverpool, England. The voyage across the Atlantic was wild and stormy. Gale succeeded gale, with furious squalls of snow and hail, but being mostly from the western quarter, gave us a fair wind, before which the good ship scudded under close-reefed topsails and reefed foresail right royally, and although a very heavy sea was experienced, no damage was sustained; the "Ariel" proving herself a splendid sea boat. During the passage I never missed my watch on deck in all weathers. Abel, however, was not so fortunate, being confined to his berth the entire passage, and not until we were in St. George's Channel did he make his appearance on deck. The officers, being occupied in looking after the safety of the ship, gave very little attention to him, thinking no doubt, sick as he was, he was better below than on deck, in such weather as we were having. Arriving in the chops of the Channel, we passed a number of vessels, many of them showing the effects of the hard winter passage across. One, the " Concordia" of the line of New York Packet ships, that sailed before we did, had lost some of her spars, the cargo (grain) had shifted, and she was listed to port very badly. The following morning the ship was close in under Holyhead, Wales. It opened bright and sunny, though cool. The sea was smooth. The great headland, standing out in bold relief, with its quaint old windmills, and dotted with numerous dwellings, formed a...

Tristan Jones has logged more miles--and more adventure--sailing single-handed than any other person alive in our time. He has crossed the Atlantic many times, often alone, and has circumnavigated the globe in small boats. One Hand for Yourself, One for the Ship is a course on single-handed sailing by the man most qualified to give it. Tristan Jones offers his highly personal perspective on both the science and the art of this ultimate challenge. It is a book for every sailor, giving the novice and the experienced sailor alike invaluable information and advice simply and with humor. Rich with anecdote and detail, written as only Tristan Jones can write, this is the handbook to turn to when planning a trip and to refer to when sailing.
