A fascinating account of the life of one of the century's great eccentrics - the brilliant Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Born in 1900 of impoverished aristocracy, he swiftly developed a mania for aviation, despite his chaotic mind and total technological incompetence. He flew reconnaissance missions in the War and wrote some strange and wonderful books, including the classic children's story THE LITTLE PRINCE, between theatrically executed airplane crashed. He died in the air in 1944, and his brief life instantly acquired mythical status. 'Every facet of Saint-Exupery's short and dramatic life is covered in this fascinating biography. This is Stacy Schiff's first book, but she writes with all the skill, assurance and mastery of an old literary hand. If there was such a thing as a prize for a first biography, I would nominate this book. ' Frank McLynn, SUNDAY TELEGRAPH.

Letter to a Hostage is a book by the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Saint-Exupéry initially wrote this piece as a preface for his best friend, Léon Werth’s novel: Trente-trois jours (Thirty Three Days). Werth had been forced to take refuge in the Jura region of France during the autumn of 1940 because of his Jewish origins. His book, however, could not be published, and so the author significantly revised his preface, removing any direct references to his friend and making him anonymous within the text and a symbol for France as the hostage of the occupying forces. This version was published independently in June 1943. The work is comprised of six short chapters which reflect upon recent aspects of the author’s life (travelling to Portugal, impressions of the Sahara, living in the USA...), and combines references to his friendship with Werth and to his love for his country.

One of the greatest masters of the illustrated book, Antoine de Saint Exupéry has been well-known for his artistic and literary talents ever since the publication ofThe Little Princein 1943. It is less well known that from childhood he decorated his letters, notebooks, journals, and diaries (and later his manuscripts) with small drawings, caricatures, cartoons, and visual puzzles, very few of which have ever been published. Now this remarkable anthology invites the reader to rediscover the life and work of one of the twentieth century’s most important writers. Facsimiles of his personal writings and of his corrections to original manuscripts are reproduced along with examples of the drawings, cartoons, and sketches with which he decorated almost every scrap of his personal writings.

“And now here is my secret. It's very simple: One sees clearly only with the heart. The most important things are invisible to the eye.” (The Fox) “When you look up at the sky at night, since I'll be living on one of them, since I'll be laughing on one of them, to you it will sound as if all the stars are laughing.” (The Little Prince) The Little Prince is a story written and illustrated by French writer, poet, and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. First published in 1943, the book has since been translated into more than 250 languages and has become one of the best-selling books to date. The Little Prince is both for children due to its illustrations and imaginative fairy-tale quality and for adults (since they were children first) due to its several observations about life and human nature. It tells the story of a pilot and the young prince he meets, who has fallen to Earth from an asteroid. The story tries to find out the secret to what is really important in life and urges us to read at many different levels of meaning, from fairy tale to deeper secrets of reality.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's timeless tale, reissued in a beautiful clothbound edition designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first published The Little Prince in 1943, only a year before his plane vanished over the Mediterranean during a reconnaissance mission. Nearly eighty years later, this fable of love and loneliness has lost none of its power. The narrator is a downed pilot in the Sahara Desert, frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane. His efforts are interrupted one day by the apparition of a little prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. "In the face of an overpowering mystery, you don't dare disobey," the narrator recalls. "Absurd as it seemed, a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and in danger of death, I took a scrap of paper and a pen out of my pocket." And so begins their dialogue, which stretches the narrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlike directions.

From a master biographer, the life story of the daring French aviator who became one of the twentieth century's most beloved authors Antoine de Saint-Exupéry disappeared at age forty-four during a reconnaissance flight over southern France. At the time he was best known for a career of daring flights over the Sahara, the Pyrenees, and Patagonia and for his contributions to the science of aviation. But the solitary hours he spent above the earth in open cockpit airplanes gave birth to a more famous legacy, a series of enchanting, autobiographical novels and the classic story The Little Prince, still the most translated book in the French language. An impoverished aristocrat from one of France's oldest families, Saint-Exupéry moved at age twenty-seven to the western Sahara Desert, to live alone in a plank shack and manage the way station for the Aéropostale, the French mail service. His careers as a novelist and an aviator were born here, and his life once he returned to Europe was defined--with brilliant and catastrophic results--by the sense of isolated fascination and curiosity he developed in the desert. In this definitive biography, Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff reveals an intrepid and unconventional life that rivals the best adventure stories.
