A condição febril e antinatural da Europa na última metade do século XVIII, uma condição que predisse grandes acontecimentos mundiais anos antes da Revolução Francesa, era especialmente adequada para abrir um amplo campo para o trabalho de ousados caçadores de fortunas. A sociedade francesa em particular estava então em estado de renascimento, de estranha agitação, que se apropriou inteiramente para provocar e encorajar tais pessoas, a se esforçarem por todos os meios para se darem a conhecer e ganhar prestígio. No início da segunda metade do século XVIII, uma névoa misteriosa, algo mística, tinha se apossado do mundo parisiense, cuja causa deve ser buscada principalmente na formação de todos os tipos de sociedades secretas. Durante muito tempo, duvidou-se bastante da origem do homem notável, que agiu principalmente sob o nome de Conde de St. Germain, e que continua até hoje, nada se sabia ao longo de sua vida.
