Excerpt from The Life of St. Louis, King of France It is not given us to imitate the grand qualities of the monarch, but all the virtues of the christian are ours. If the greatest prince of his age has become a saint, cannot we have the same aspirations. As King, he is the model of kings; as a Christian, he is the model of all men. Excerpt from Saint Louis, King of France, 1215-1270 It was the 25th of April - probably in 1215, but the exact year is uncertain - the festival of St. Mark in the joyous Easter season. The French peasantry had donned their holiday attire, for there was surcease of tillage in the land on that day, and sports and revelry in prospect for the afternoon. But in the early morning hours the bells boomed solemnly from village steeple and castle keep, summoning the faithful to join in the processions, with black-draped crosses in front, which wound slowly through the several parishes, while the chant of the Greater Litanies filled the air with bewailings and petitions for graces and temporal prosperity, but more especially for a mitigation of the misery of Christians in the Holy Land. Excerpt from The White Queen: A Tale of the Youth of St. Louis, King of France The mother moved first. When the dawn stole through the chinks beneath the crazy door, she rose, stirred the dying fire, and felt for the hand of her child. It lay warm - too warm - within her own. Then the little one tossed on the trundle-bed, and in a hoarse voice asked for water. She was holding the cup to its lips when Jean the Miller roused from his straw close by, and the mother could guess His question before he uttered it. Saint Louis Classic Reprint written by Frederick Perry and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-08 with History categories.

Saint Louis by Frederick Perry is a gripping account of one of France's most famous rulers with a period of rule that was replete with trials and tribulations as well as extended peace time and development. Perry puts together all the elements of Louis' multifaceted time on the throne of one of the most powerful kingdoms in Europe. Perry's narrative is unlike historical textbook accounts which often have a tendency to be drab. Instead, in Saint Louis the reader will find the style of writing akin to a fiction thriller with just the right dose of drama, adventure and tragedy. Spread across twelve chapters, the book covers the early life of Louis the IXth or Saint Louis as he was more commonly called, and moves on to describe periods of peace and the two crusades he undertook during his reign. Perry also dedicates the latter half of the book to foreign policy, internal affairs and the personal life of the king before concluding with his death. Saint Louis does not offer a single dull moment in its entirety. However, it is the section on Louis' personal life and the periods of peace that really bring out the true character of this important historical figure. His love for art brought about innovation in the gothic style of architecture, and Louis also worked doggedly for improving the professionalism of the legal administration of his empire. The work contains many illustrations and shields depicting different stages and times in the life of Louis and every chapter has the year indented on the side of each paragraph for the reader to know the exact chronology of events. With a racy narrative and gripping content, this work is not just for students of history but for general readers as well. Excerpt from History of the St. Louis Cathedral, of New Orleans Chartres (formerly Conde), St. Anne and Royal streets and St. Antoine alley, the later named in honor of father antoine, the first curate of the church. A wooden and adobe structure was erected under the auspices of the French Government, and in honor of the King of France, named the Church of St. Ignatius, about 1720, from which time date the archives of the Catholic Church in New Orleans. In January, 1721, Father Charlevoix, a Jesuit missionary, reached New Orleans from Canada by way of the Illinois and the Mississippi rivers, and in his description of the infant city he sums it up as consisting of one hundred cabins, placed without much order, a large wooden ware house, two or three dwelling houses that would not' have adorned a vil lage, and a miserable storehouse which had been at first occupied as a chapel - a shed being now used for this purpose. The population of the city did not then exceed 200 persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
