Un ventitreenne, in crisi con i suoi esami universitari e lasciato dalla fidanzata, conduce un’esistenza piatta e distante dalla realtà, fino a quando non scopre che il suo nuovo vicino di casa è Iginio Fibbrazia, uno dei più rinomati scrittori del Novecento, ormai dimenticato dal pubblico. I due stringono una strana amicizia: mentre il giovane rivela il grande sogno di scrivere un libro l’altro lo consiglia e lo redarguisce, spronandolo a vivere appieno. Le serate trascorse in compagnia del suo mito letterario, impegnato nella stesura dell’ultimo romanzo, leniscono il dolore per la rottura sentimentale, e restituiscono al ragazzo la voglia di incontrare gli amici, di tornare a frequentare una coetanea, persino di affrontare con un pizzico in più di serenità i duri tirocini, propedeutici alla sua laurea, presso la clinica veterinaria dell’università di Pisa. Nel suo periodo più buio, il giovane ha iniziato a interloquire con una proiezione mentale di se stesso assisa sul labile confine tra fantasia e realtà; un alter ego carismatico, caustico e irriverente: Saliborn. E Saliborn continua ad affiancarlo, nella quotidianità e nei sogni, che via via più assidui, tormentano il giovane, preceduti da terribili mal di testa. Sogni incentrati sulla figura del Mostro, una misteriosa entità che sembra non volergli dare tregua. Mentre di notte si consuma una visionaria battaglia contro il Mostro, di giorno la vita lo chiama a rapportarsi con successi, difficoltà, lutti e tradimenti. Sull’orlo di un abisso emotivo, forse, solo conoscere la verità su se stesso potrà farlo svoltare verso il passo ultimo e inevitabile.
