Il volume affronta e porta allo scoperto come i tre grandi filoni di pensiero dell’Ottocento in Italia (liberale, cattolico e socialista) abbiano spostato l’interesse di grandi masse di lavoratori e di cittadini da visionipuramente nazionalistiche e colonialistiche, a visioni legate alla condizione umana e, nello specifico, al rapporto tra lavoro e malattia, nei due aspetti: la necessità di garantire una idonea e appropriataprotezione medico e igienistico-sanitaria per prevenire la morbosità nei luoghi di lavoro; il rapporto tra la condizione urbana come fattore di malattia e quali provvidenze a monte nella decisione urbanistica e in quella edilizio-architettonica debbano essere assunte per garantire salute. Nell’ultima parte del volume si affrontano, dalla crisi iniziata nel 2007-08 e non ancora risolta, le strategie governative tese a privatizzare il comparto sanitario, con i relativi centri di elaborazione culturale e di scambio con i poteri forti che operano a livello transnazionale. Per rovesciare tale trend occorre cogliere l’innovazione in biomedicina come un’occasione per riconquistare il diritto alla salute, per riaffermare che solo il coinvolgimento della popolazione portatrice dei grandi valori di uguaglianza e di solidarietà umana può frenare il mercato della salute e portare alla luce l’impostura neoliberista che ha prodotto solo iniquità,disuguaglianze e macerie nelle società mondializzate.

In 150 years Italy transformed itself from a poor and backward country into one where living standards are among the highest in the world. In Measuring Wellbeing, Giovanni Vecchi provides an innovative analysis of this change by drawing on family accounts that provide engaging insights into life and are the "micro" data that create the foundations for the "macro" picture of variations and fluctuations in the development of Italy. Vecchi provides a nuanced account of the changes. He emphasizes that the concept of wellbeing is multidimensional and must include non-monetary aspects of life: nutrition, health and education, as well as less tangible elements such as freedom or the possibility to exercise one's political rights. The book deals with this polyhedral nature of wellbeing. Among the insights are that Italians succeeded in combining growth with equity, but that the gap between the North and South did not narrow; the while longevity has increased, education has not improved as much as it could have; and that for close to three decades, Italy's virtuous path has come to a halt: the wellbeing of the Italian people is at the crossroads between progress and decline. As Italy emerged from World War II, the first women entered the national government. The 45 women who became parliamentarians when Italian women were first entitled to vote in 1946 represented a "lost wave" of feminist action, argues Molly Tambor. In this work, Tambor reconstructs the role that these female politicians played in Italy's new democratic Republic. They proved critical in ensuring that the new Constitution formally guaranteed the equality of all citizens regardless of sex, translating the general constitutional guarantees into direct legislative rights and protections. They used a specific electoral and legislative strategy, "constitutional rights feminism," to construct an image of the female citizen as a bulwark of democracy. Mining existing tropes of femininity such as the Resistance heroine, the working mother, the sacrificial Catholic, and the "mamma Italiana," they searched for social consensus for women's equality that could reach across religious, ideological, and gender divides. The political biographies of woman politicians are intertwined with the history of the laws they created and helped pass, including paid maternity leave, the closing of state-run brothels, and women's right to become judges. Women politicians navigated gendered political identity as they picked and chose among competing models of femininity in Cold War Italy. In so doing, The Lost Wave shows, they forged a political legacy that affected the rights and opportunities of all Italian citizens.

The recent vast upsurge in social science scholarship on job precarity has generally little to say about earlier forms of this phenomenon. Eloisa Betti’s monograph convincingly demonstrates on the example of Italy that even in the post-war phase of Keynesian stability and welfare state, precarious labor was an underlying feature of economic development. She examines how in this short period exceptional politics of labor stability prevailed. The volume then presents the processes whereby labor precarity regained momentum— under the name of flexibility— in the post-Fordist phase from the early 1980s, taking on new forms in the Craxi and Berlusconi eras. Multiple actors are addressed in the analysis. The book gives voice to intellectuals, scholars, politicians and trade unionists as they have framed the concept and debates on precarious work from the 1950s onwards. Views of labor law experts, politicians and public servants are investigated in regard to labor regulations. Positions of the very precarians are explored, ranging from rural women, industrial homeworkers and blue-collar workers to physicians, university researchers and trainees, unveiling the emergence of anti-precarity social movements. The continuous role of women’s associations and feminist groups in opposing labor precarity since the 1950s is prominently exposed.
