Résumé du livre Salvatore est un jeune Napolitain de 26 ans qui se prend pour un lover et reve d'avoir la belle vie. Un gros compte en banque, des superbes nanas continuellement à ses pieds et des magnifiques voitures de luxe. Le tout, sans planter le moindre clou. Il voudrait rester jeune et glander toute sa vie, mais son père, fatigué de la situation, décide un jour de l'envoyer bosser chez le très respecté Gennaro, son oncle qui aurait fait fortune en Belgique. Salvatore part donc pour le Nord, le coeur rempli d'espoir, avec l'intime conviction d'y faire rapidement fortune et de pouvoir retourner ensuite à Naples pour dépenser comme un nabab. Cependant, le bonheur tant attendu fait vite place à la cruelle déception. Salvatore découvrira rapidement que le restaurant de l'oncle Gennaro n'est qu'une gargotte située à Charleroi, ville qui est loin d'etre renommée pour ses plages, son soleil et ses nanas en bikini, mais plutot pour ses quartiers sordides, ses zones industrielles abandonnées et sa criminalité galopante. Cette Belgique pluvieuse, les nombreuses péripéties qui l'attendent, ses collègues de travail un peu particuliers et ses tentatives d'intégration à la société belge changeront à jamais notre héros napolitain. En s'éloignant de plus en plus de son ancienne personnalité, Salvatore découvrira en Belgique comment vivre avec simplicité. Du moins jusqu'au jour ou un certain oncle d'Amérique, un homme aux affaires douteuses, retournera à Naples en grande pompe pour vendre du reve de gloire et de richesse aux jeunes des quartiers défavorisés. Technique narrative et conception du roman Salvatore incarne le stéréotype de l'Italien materné, rusé, passionné et fainéant. L'entièreté de la structure narrative est basée sur l'utilisation ironique et hyberbolique des stéréotypes. Italiens, Belges, Francais et Allemands représentent des genres humains utilisés dans le roman pour raconter les expériences et l'évolution du personnage principal. Le brassage ethnique européen, par ses fascinantes ressemblances et différences, représente le fond du récit à la fois moderne, spontané et hilare, écrit intentionnellement dans un langage familier et hybride (les incursions linguistiques entre l'itlalien et le francais ne sont pas rares). La structure du roman se divise en épisodes, véritables flashs narratifs qui composent le puzzle de l'intrigue.
