This volume looks at the evolution of coalition politics in India, both at the national and provincial levels. It investigates the processes that led to coalition governments. It explores the formation of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Janata Party experiment, and the Third Front experiments. The book highlights the growing importance of regional parties in national politics and argues that the very notion of representation in terms of ‘national’ and ‘local’ is being redefined in the context of the emerging significance of coalition politics. It also examines the role of cultural synergy and political expediency in coalition politics and discusses the inevitability of coalition government in India.

About the Book : - Individual leaders play an important role in the politics of South Asia, the institutional set-up of the subcontinent providing them much room to manoeuvre. The carefully crafted personalities of these politicians are a focal point of their parties, of political movements as well as the media. Yet, curiously enough, scholars have paid little attention to how leadership is practised in South Asia. This volume addresses this gap by studying the different styles of political leadership in the region.Examining different settings rural and urban areas, political parties and state governments the articles are studies of various politicians making their careers and/or actively thinking about leadership. Written on the basis of participant observation, formal and informal interviews, media reports, and archival research, these articles explore the many facets of political leaders the boss, lord and captain. From symbolic actions and rhetorical usage, to moral conviction, alliance-building and modes of distribution, each article illustrates the opportunities and constraints experienced by the politically ambitious. In so doing, the book provides valuable insight into the nature of democracy and electoral politics in the subcontinent, providing clues for understanding and explaining the relative stability of the body politic of one of the most socially complex and economically differentiated regions of the world.

Political Violence In South Asia written by Ali Riaz and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-24 with Social Science categories.

Political violence has remained an integral part of South Asian society for decades. The region has witnessed and continued to encounter violence for achieving political objectives from above and from below. Violence is perpetrated by the state, by non-state actors, and used by the citizens as a form of resistance. Ethnic insurgency, religion-inspired extremism, and ideology-driven hostility are examples of violent acts that have emerged as challenges to the states which have responded with violence in the form of civil war and through violations of human rights disregarding international norms. This book explores various dimensions of political violence in South Asia, namely in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Each chapter either speaks to an important aspect of the political violence or provides an overall picture of the nature and scope of political violence in the respective country. Political violence is understood in the larger sense of political, that is, above and beyond institutions, and also as an integral part of social relationships where social norms and the role of individual agency play seminal roles. The contributions in this book incorporate both institutional and non-institutional dimensions of political violence. Exploring how everyday life in South Asian states and societies is transformed by the engagement with violence through direct and indirect methods, this book adopts an interdisciplinary framework; diverse methods are employed – from ethnographic readings to more macro level analyses. The phenomenon is explored from historical, sociological, and political perspectives. This book will be useful as a supplementary text in courses on South Asian Studies in general and South Asian Politics in particular.

This book investigates image politics during elections and how the political discourse is reflected during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2012 by the media and the state. It reveals new dimensions of media geography in India and makes image construction and interpretation easy to comprehend. This interdisciplinary approach is located at the interface of geography with social, political, cultural, and media sciences. The book draws a geographical interpretation of politics to reveal the role of both media and the state to shape the political discourse with special focus on the privileged position of the “heartland” Uttar Pradesh in Indian politics. It studies the “mediascape” by highlighting application of media in both public and private spheres and discussing the importance of both old and new media, e.g., print, radio, TV, social media. Several crucial aspects are discussed and answered. How do media and politicians construct politics around the issue of minorities? How do media communalize issues during the election campaign? How can local issues gain national importance and shape national politics? This book appeals to scientists but also to graduates and postgraduates that want to understand the way image politics are performed.
