When Professor Kurtz retired, training a dog was the last thing on her mind, but a shaggy, black scamp called Sammy entered her life one day, and her world changed. The story tells how Sammy's new owner civilized his behavior through training at a local dog club. His aptitude for rally obedience enticed her to continue. Sammy, it turned out, was a pretty good competitor, except for his barking; it was Linda who had difficulty learning the sport. They spent an agonizing year attending one trial after another, while Linda gave unclear cues, got lost in the show ring, missed stations, and almost was tossed out of the sport altogether, until she finally began to qualify and earned a fine collection of ribbons. An introverted academic, she never quite fit in with the social world of dog people. But, in the end, she and Sammy triumphed. The book covers their first three years together. Linda Farris Kurtz's career as a practicing social worker and educator spanned forty-six years from 1958 to her retirement in 2004. After retiring, she adopted Sammy, the scrappy canine subject of her memoir. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with Sammy and her husband, Ernest Kurtz, who is the author of several books, including The Spirituality of Imperfection, published by Bantam in 1993. Throughout their thirty-two year marriage, both Drs. Kurtz have researched and written on recovery from alcoholism and mental illness. Linda Farris Kurtz is the author of one other book, Self-help and Support Groups: A Handbook for Practitioners, published by Sage Publications in 1997.

This Is Not A Love Story written by Judy Brown and has been published by Little, Brown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-28 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A razor-sharp, hilarious, and poignant memoir about growing up in the closed world of the ultraorthodox Jewish community. The third of six children in a family that harks back to a gloried Hassidic dynasty, Judy Brown grew up with the legacy of centuries of religious teaching, and the faith and lore that sustained her people for generations. But her carefully constructed world begins to crumble when her "crazy" brother Nachum returns home after a year in Israel living with relatives. Though supposedly "cured," he is still prone to retreating into his own mind or erupting in wordless rages. The adults' inability to make him better -- or even to give his affliction a name -- forces Judy to ask larger questions: If God could perform miracles for her sainted ancestors, why can't He cure Nachum? And what of the other stories her family treasured? Judy starts to negotiate with God, swinging from holy tenets to absurdly hilarious conclusions faster than a Talmudic scholar: she goes on a fast to nab coveted earrings; she fights with her siblings at the dinner table for the ultimate badge of honor ("Who will survive the next Holocaust?"); and she adamantly defends her family's reputation when, scandalously, her parents are accused of having fallen in love -- -which is absolutely not what pious people do. For all its brutal honesty about this insular community, This Is Not a Love Story is ultimately a story of a family like so many others, whose fierce love for each other and devotion to their faith pulled them through the darkest time in their lives.

The Pastor follows two brothers growing up in Kentucky right before World War II, who go through a spiritual awakening that will affect the rest of their lives. The youngest brother, Elmer, is blessed by God with the spirit of faith healing. His family suffers a tragedy with the death of their patriarch. During this terrible time, the town’s dynamic new pastor arrives. It is then that Elmer’s gift of healing is unlocked. Pastor Hurst takes Elmer with him on spiritual missions and the two become a formidable team of healers. When Pearl Harbor breaks out, the eldest brother, Josiah, heeds a calling to join the war effort. He becomes a fighter pilot in England shortly after the Battle of Britain. Elmer stays behind to continue his work with Pastor Hurst. Josiah’s plane is shot down. He is captured and interred at a German prison camp in eastern Prussia. Elmer also wants to go to war and argues with the pastor, who wants him to stay home and continue God’s work. Elmer departs for boot camp and becomes a door gunner on a B-17. But he too is shot down and ends up at the same prison camp as his brother. The camp commandant’s senior guard, known as the “Mad German,” learns of Elmer’s healing powers and pleads for help to heal his son, who has polio. Elmer agrees and uses what little strength he has. The two brothers match their faith and strength of will against all the odds facing them. Will their faith in God be enough to survive?

When O. P. Sam and his sister Sheila grew of age to leave their parents' home for one of their own, little did they know of the many new friends they would meet, wondrous things they would encounter in their new and burgeoning lives, nor the adventure awaiting them. Happening upon Wut and Shu, the two cats living in the house occupying the yard in which they had chosen to make a home, and overhearing the terrible dilemma puzzling them, introductions were made and a plot was hatched. The four of them would fashion costumes to fool Mickey, the man of the house, and O. P. Sam and Sheila would move in like undercover agents to infiltrate Mickey's life and render him unaware of his true companions absence, while Wut and Shu would stay with the little sick girl down the lane. Having never even seen the inside of a human home before, the pair explored and experienced things so absolutely unknown to them as to set their minds afire with bewilderment and curiosity. While a desire to help even further swelled within them, they just had to meet the Ellie, the object of their new friends' obsession, that is when the sad news found them: Ellie was dying. And the four fast friends swore to ease her passing, her mother's impending grief, and Mickey's bachelorhood.
