Excerpt from San Diego Mission California, in the early days, was divided into four mili tary districts. The headquarters or garrisons were located at San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco, respectively. These military posts provided the guards for the Missions situated within the limits of their jurisdiction. The military district of San Diego embraced the Missions of San Diego, San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and San Gabriel, of which the City of Los Angeles in spiritual mat ters was a dependency. Although independent of one an other, a sort of union or connection existed among the Missions of the district. This suggested the geographical rather than the chronological order in relating the local his tory of the twenty-one Missions. Excerpt from San Juan Capistrano Mission It was owing to the animosity of Rivera, as we know from the narrative on San Diego, that the two Fathers Lasuen and Amurrio were compelled to remain idle for nearly a year. Peremptory or ders from Viceroy Bucareli at last put an end to the chicanery. Fr. Serra, then at San Diego, was so overjoyed when the orders arrived that he rang the bells and celebrated a High Mass in thanksgiving. Having received orders to see that Mission San Juan Capistrano be established without delay on the site pre viously selected, Rivera detailed a guard of ten soldiers under a corporal. Instead of sending back Fr. Lasuen to lay the founda tions, Fr. Serra appointed him senior missionary of San Diego. Excerpt from Old Missions and Mission Indians of California: Fully Illustrated In 1767, King Charles III. Of Spain ordered an expedition to sail, to take possession of the Cali fornias, convert the Indians found there, and protect the country from the encroachments of Russians from the north, which the latter then owned. Jose de G'alvez, the visitador general of New Spain, - a man of great foresight and ability, - to whom the Americans of the South California of to day owe much, - was the man to whom this important undertaking was intrusted. The only knowledge of where he was to go was obtained from the very indefinite 'survey of Vizcaino, yet so closely was this first definite scheme of colonization and conversion planned that there were orders to plant a mission and garr1son first at San Diego, then at Monterey, and then one, half way between, to be called Buena Ventura. The unaccustomed echoes thus set flying had scarcely died away when we rushed into the arms of those who had arrived before us; and all congratulated themselves that the expeditions were thus happily joined and at their wished-for destination. On the third day after his arrival Serra wrote to his friend Palou, who had been left at a new mission in Lower California, dating the letter from the truly magnificent and with-rea- son-famous port of San Diego. He said: the tract through which we passed is generally very good land, with plenty of water, and there as well as here, the country is neither rocky nor overgrown with brushwood. There are many hills but they are generally composed of earth. About half way here the valleys and banks of rivulets begin to be delightful. We have found vines of a large size and in some cases loaded with grapes: we also find an abundance of roses, which appear to be like those of Castile. In fine it is a good country and very different from old (Baja) California. The first detachment that landed at San Diego fixed upon a nook near the bay and river for the site of a permanent town. It was a place called Cosoy by the Indians but it in, now known as Old Town?an ideal point in the early days for defense, shelter, fresh water, embarkation and farming. Here was built a few huts, a corral and an entrenched camp. On the first Sunday of July Father Serrq, and hisfellow monks held a thanksgiving mass atos- oy; and on Sunday July 16th the padre dedicated the first of the numerous missions yet to be established, blessing its cross and conferring upon it the name of San...

Excerpt from A Visit to the Mission Indians of California In my report of a previous visit, published by the Indian Rights Association, it was stated that At my earnest request the Government has appointed special counsel to take up and defend the rights of these Indians, but appointed him to serve without compensation. It seems evident, therefore, that this effort must be sustained and pushed by our Association. It is known to many that the Indian Rights Association became responsible for the fees of Mr. Ward, the special counsel appointed by the attorney-general, neither the Department of Justice nor the Interior Department having any funds to use for such purposes. The case of Byrnes m. The San Jacinto Indians came to trial last summer, and was decided in favor of the plaintiff, and, failing to induce the Government to stand sponsor for the case, and assume responsibility for costs and indemnity to plaintiff pending an appeal to the Supreme Court, the Secretary of the Indian Rights Association gave his personal check for which has been deposited with the clerk of the Court for San Diego County, California, to await the issue of this appeal. By the timely arrival of this check, the immediate ejectment of zoo Indians from the homes and lands on which, by con cession of plaintiff, they have lived continuously since 1815, was delayed at least until the Supreme Court of the State shall con firm the decree of the lower court. Excerpt from Report of Chas. A. Wetmore: Special U. S. Commissioner of Mission Indians of Southern California These names are given with reference to relative geographical position going north from San Diego. None of the mission establishments were situated more than thirty miles from the Pacific coast. Most of them were in the principal and most fertile valleys near the ocean. The most northerly one was San Francisco de Solano, (now Sonoma, ) near San Francisco, to the north of the bay.
