Stanco, magro e con le carni lacerate dai ferri ai polsi, alle caviglie e ai fianchi per penitenza: così doveva apparire Guglielmo, eremita di probabili natali francesi che scelse come luogo d penitenza la Maremma, in un punto talmente malsano da esser chiamato proprio “Malavalle”, vicino a Castiglione della Pescaia (GR). Di questa figura molti aspetti restano tuttora oscuri, a cominciare dalla sua reale identità. Tutti i suoi biografi hanno preso spunto dal libellus di un discepolo del santo, Alberto, aggiungendo liberamente – spesso influenzati da leggende sorte nel frattempo – fatti non documentabili e personali interpretazioni. E così, il santo padre dell’Ordine guglielmita è divenuto Guglielmo X duca d’Aquitania, vissuto nel primo trentennio del XII secolo; è stato confuso, grazie alla diffusione del ciclo epico della Chanson de Guillaume, con san Guglielmo di Gellone, vissuto nell’VIII secolo; ma di certo c’è questo: dall’esperienza di quell’uomo dal corpo coperto di piaghe ma dalla tempra ineguagliabile sorse, agli inizi del XIII secolo, un vero e proprio Ordine: quello dei Guglielmiti che, dalla Maremma grossetana, ebbe in breve tempo una larga diffusione in tutta Italia, in Germania, nei Paesi Bassi, nel nord della Francia, in Boemia ed in Ungheria, per poi scomparire agli inizi dell’era moderna.

Karl Valentin once asked: "How can it be that only as much happens as fits into the newspaper the next day?" He focussed on the problem that information of the past has to be organised, arranged and above all: selected and put into form in order to be perceived as a whole. In this sense, the process of selection must be seen as the fundamental moment – the “Urszene” – of making History. This book shows selection as highly creative act. A concise and accessible history of four of the monastic orders in the middle ages. In 1274 the Council of Lyons decreed the end of various "new orders" of Mendicants which had emerged during the great push for evangelism and poverty in the thirteenth-century Latin Church. The Franciscans and Dominicans were explicitly excluded, while the Carmelites and Austin friars were allowed a stay of execution. These last two were eventually able to acquire approval, but other smaller groups, in particular the Friars of the Sack and Pied Friars, were forced to disband. This book outlines the history of those who were threatened by 1274, tracing the development of the two larger orders down to the Council of Trent, and following the fragmentary sources for the brief histories of the discontinued friaries. For the first time these orders are treated comparatively: the volume offers a total history, from their origins, spirituality and pastoral impact, to their music, buildings and runaways. FRANCES ANDREWS is Professor in Mediaeval History at the University of St Andrews.
