San Ildefonso de Toledo y su De itinere deserti. Una de las figuras más relevantes de la Iglesia visigoda de nuestro siglo VII y una obra, aparentemente secundaria, preterida y poco estudiada. ¿Por qué este opúsculo ha permanecido en el olvido o ha interesado a pocos estudiosos? Quizás por que la simple lectura del libro puede dar la sensación de una obra en ciernes, algo así como un borrador, o unas notas amplias para ser desarrolladas posteriormente. La brevedad de los capítulos, algún anacoluto y, sobre todo, el conectar capítulos de contenido teológico con otros puramente simbólicos y ricos de analogías hacen de él un libro singular, único en su género. A simple vista, no parece un tratado homogéneo. Pero si se profundiza, se encuentra un esquema y un plan bien determinado, aunque no consumado. Estas páginas pretenden hacer justicia y rendir homenaje a San Ildefonso, además de aportar nuevos hallazgos a la patrística Hispana. Al inicio, se ofrece un cuadro completo de la patria y de la Iglesia en las que vivió y actuó el “monje-obispo” de Toledo (capítulo I). Una doble óptica repasa con rigor su figura histórica y su producción literaria (capítulo II). Fiel al original latino, surge esta nueva versión castellana que dispone al lector moderno a entender mejor el sentido teológico de la obra (capítulo III). La transmisión manuscrita y las ediciones siguientes, la finalidad del santo al escribir este tratado y sus destinatarios, así como la estructura y división de la obra (capítulo IV), sirven de marco para ahondar en el contenido doctrinal del tratado. No sólo se enumeran y analizan los símbolos y alegorías de inspiración bíblica o patrística. La dependencia textual o ideológica de S. Jerónimo, S. Agustín, S. Gregorio Magno y San Isidoro de Sevilla es palmaria. El clímax lo constituye la síntesis teológica y la doctrina ascética y mística, evidentes en esta obra de S. Ildefonso (capítulo V).
