San Juan de Ávila (* Almodóvar del Campo, Ciudad Real, 6 de enero de 15001 – † Montilla, 10 de mayo de 1569) fue un sacerdote y escritor ascético español. Es, desde 1946, patrono del clero español. Tras haberlo anunciado en Madrid el 20 de agosto de 2011, el papa Benedicto XVI lo proclamó doctor de la Iglesia el 7 de octubre de 2012, junto con la mística alemana Hildegarda de Bingen, durante la misa de apertura de la XIII Asamblea General Ordinaria del Sínodo de los obispos dedicado al tema de la nueva evangelización.2 Es el cuarto santo español en alcanzar ese título.En medio de la efervescencia resultante del Renacimiento, Juan de Ávila vivió en contacto con la mayor parte de los espirituales de su tiempo: Ignacio de Loyola, Luis de Granada, Juan de Dios, Juan de Ribera, Teresa de Ávila, Tomás de Villanueva y Pedro de Alcántara, y representó lo mejor de la Iglesia del siglo XVI. De una influencia notable, sus palabras fueron fuente de inspiración para muchos escritores sacerdotales coetáneos y posteriores: Antonio de Molina, Luis de la Palma, Luis de la Puente, Carlos Borromeo, Bartolomé de los Mártires, Diego de Estella, Pierre de Bérulle, Alonso Rodríguez, Francisco de Sales, Alfonso María de Ligorio, Antonio María Claret, entre otros.Ante todo se le tuvo como un excelente predicador y escritor ascético. escribió Epistolario espiritual para todos los estados (Madrid, 1578), colección de cartas ascéticas dirigidas a todo tipo de personas humildes y elevadas, religiosas y profanas, pero también a San Ignacio de Loyola, San Juan de Dios, y sobre todo monjas y devotas como la ya citada Sancha Carrillo; en él se anuncia ya el estilo incomparable de Fray Luis de Granada.

While providing detailed analyses of his major works for voice, piano, and the stage, Clark argues that Granados's art represented a unifying presence on the cultural landscape of Spain during a period of imperial decline, political unrest, and economic transformation. Drawing on newly discovered documents, Clark explores the cultural spheres in which Granados moved, particularly of Castile and Catalonia. Granados's best-known music was inspired by the art of Francisco Goya, especially the Goyescas suite for solo piano that became the basis for the opera. These pieces evoked the colorful and dramatic world that Goya inhabited and depicted in his art. Granados's fascination with Goya's Madrid set him apart from fellow nationalists Albeniz and Falla, who drew their principal inspiration from Andalusia.
