Acompa a San Pablo en su primer viaje de evangelizacin, auxiliando despus a Pedro al escribir sus Memorias que se convirtieron en: "El Evangelio Segn San Marcos"; al final de su vida difundi El Evangelio en Etiopa e igual que varios personajes bblicos, existen versiones distintas respecto al nombre de sus padres, as como de los lugares donde naci y muri. Es el Santo Patrono de la Baslica de Venecia, donde es venerado por la Iglesia Catlica, as como en diversas Iglesias de Latinoamrica, Europa y Africa; extendiendo su veneracin a las Iglesias Copta y Ortodoxa. Eduardo Agatn Hernndez ha recurrido a diferente informacin histrica del Cristianismo, referente a este Santo Patrono del pueblo donde naci en 1943, en la Costa de chica del Estado de Guerrero en Mxico, donde es venerado desde 1840 que cambi su nombre original por el de este Evangelista, pues segn la mitologa del pueblo decidi quedarse a vivir con sus habitantes, segn le contaron sus abuelos, padres y hermanos, originarios tambin de este pueblo.
