As a matter of fact, it has engaged the serious attention of School Boards and Committees, and been made the subject of repeated legislation by the Educa tion Department. The result of all this is seen in the improved character of the school-buildings which are everywhere being erected. In these, we find that greater attention is paid, not only to the space demanded for each pupil, to which a few years ago the official legislation was almost exclusively confined, but educationists have come to see that lighting, warming, ventila tion, and general sanitary conditions, are of prime importance in their bearing on the health and progress of the children gathered in these schools. Much still remains to be learnt in regard to these matters, and it is of the highest importance that school-managers and all who are concerned in the erection of school premises - or what is perhaps equally important, the modification of already existing schools - should be well acquainted with the principles which determine the sanitary condition of all school premises and arrangements. Excerpt from Minimum Health and Sanitation Standards in Schools Inasmuch as the union movement among teachers is characterized by a growing desire on the part of teachers to improve the conditions under which the work of teaching is carried on, the Teachers Union decided to go ahead with its plans. Accordingly, it was decided by the Union that the President should resign his position as teacher in a high school. The resignation was accepted January 3, 1921. The letter of resignation dated December 14, 1920, contains this statement quoted here to indicate the scope of the inquiry proposed: Among the conditions inquired into should be the following: The physical conditions, the conditions relative to ad ministration, the conditions relating to teaching. In addition, I believe it is important that studies be made of the quality of our ideals in relation to the prevailing schools of educational thought. In this connection, we should know the source of the moral, the' social, the civic and the professional inspiration of our teachers. The study of these conditions in relation to the product as shown in the output of our schools and in the quality of our citizenship should give us important leads for fundamental changes. Excerpt from Report on the Sanitary Condition of the Public Schools of Buffalo: Made by the Visiting Committee of the Association, March, 1898 It is hoped that the Schutz Building and the paste board annex of No. 18, taken as types of their respective classes, will soon be closed, but experience shows that this is a hope with a large element of uncertainty. For instance, last year School No. 24 had six annexes, No. 9 had two, and No. 55, one. All of these schools had also children in basement rooms This fall two new schools, Nos. 57 and 58, were opened, which, it had been predicted, would relieve the pressure on these older schools close all the annexes. But the new schools, opened in September, are full. No. 58, with a seating capacity of 850, has 958 registered, and No. 24 has still three annexes, No. 9 has still its two, both crowded, with an additional line of desks in most of the rooms in the school building proper, while both of these schools, and No. 55 also, have still classes in their base: ment rooms.
