Charting the evolution of the port cities of Atlantic Spain and Portugal over four centuries, this book examines the often dynamic interaction between the large privileged ports of Lisbon, Seville and Cadiz (the Metropoles) and the smaller ports of, among others, Oporto, Corunna and Santander (the Second Tier). The book particularly focuses on the implications of state-sponsored commercial policies for the main ports of Atlantic Iberia during the monopoly period extending from 1503 to c.1778, and briefly considers the implications of the suppression of monopoly for these centres over the remainder of the nineteenth century. Patrick O'Flanagan employs a wealth of source material to provide a multi-faceted survey of the growth of these port cities, moving deftly from local concerns to regional developments and global relationships. Beyond Spain and Portugal, the book also considers the important role played by the Atlantic archipelagoes of the Canaries, the Azores and Madeira. Estudio histórico que aborda el proceso constructivo del Poblado de Pescadores Sotileza (actual Barrio Pesquero de Santander), como uno de los primeros ejemplos de vivienda social de la Obra Sindical del Hogar del Ministerio de la Vivienda. Al mismo tiempo, se reconstruye el relato de la segregación poblacional que supuso el traslado de 265 familias de pescadores desde su histórica ubicación en Puertochico y San Martín hasta la dársena de Maliaño en la que se levantará el nuevo poblado a partir de 1943. Se analizan las dotaciones del proyecto: plaza del mercado, locales comerciales, cine, centro cívico, iglesia parroquial, convento, colegio y viviendas. El estudio recoge también la imagen de los tipos humanos vinculados a la pesca, desde su visión pintoresca (grabados y pintura) y literaria, hasta el realismo que concede la aparición de la fotografía. Se dedica un capítulo específico, fundamentalmente gráfico, al papel de la mujer en el oficio de la pesca, su trabajo como redera, nescatilla y vendedora de pescado. Este trabajo es un reconocimiento a un sector de la población que ha sido, históricamente, denostado desde un punto de vista social. Sirvan estas páginas como homenaje a los valores culturales identitarios de un colectivo social, el de las gentes de la mar.
