With the Paduan playwright Angelo Beolco, aka Ruzante, as a focal point, this book sheds new light on his oeuvre and times - and on Venetian patrician interest in him - by embedding the Venetian aspects of his life within the monumental changes taking place in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Venice, politically, economically, socially, and artistically. In a study of patronage in the broadest sense of the term, Linda Carroll draws on vast quantities of new archival information; and by reading the previously unpublished primary sources against each other, she uncovers remarkable and heretofore unsuspected coincidences and connections. She documents the well-known links between the increasingly fruitless trade to the north and the need for new investments in land (re)gained by Venice on the mainland, links between problems of governance and political networks. She unveils the significance and potential purposes of those who invited Ruzante to perform in what are interpreted as "rudely" metaphorical truth-telling plays for Venetians at the highest social and political levels. Focusing on a group of patrons of art works in S. Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the first chapter establishes their numerous interrelated commercial and political interests and connects them to the content of the works and artists chosen to execute them. The second chapter demonstrates the economic interests and related political tensions that lay behind the presence of many high-ranking government officials at a scandalous 1525 Ruzante performance. It also draws on these and materials concerning previous generations of the Beolco family and Venetian patricians to provide an entirely new picture of Beolco's relationships with his Venetian supporters. The third chapter analyzes an important Venetian literary manuscript of the period in the Bodleian Library of Oxford University whose copyist had remained unknown and whose contents have been little studied. The identity of the copyist, a central figure in the worlds of theatrical and historical and, now, literary writing in early sixteenth century Venice, is clarified and the works in the manuscript connected to the cultural worlds of Venice, Padua and Rome.

Esistono appassionati custodi di oggetti d’epoca, case e stalle diroccate, musei rurali dedicati e gli ultimi testimoni di quella epopea. Ma nel corso del Novecento il mondo contadino, sacrificato sull’altare della patria della Grande Guerra, ha finito per subire l’incedere della civiltà industriale e consumistica del secondo dopoguerra. Una storia secolare che aveva saputo elaborare una cultura alternativa a quella colta, capace di dare un significato profondo al vivere e al morire, è ben presto superata in nome del progresso e della comodità. Dai bò al trattore, dalla stalla alla fabbrica, dalle case in pietra al cemento. La fretta di lasciarsi alle spalle un tempo di miseria e tribolazioni fa dimenticare quello che di buono la civiltà contadina aveva serbato per secoli. Il saggio è un omaggio all’ultimo contadino, a quei pochi che ancora si ostinano a rimanere legati al ciclo naturale delle stagioni, ai lavori nei campi, a regolare i mestieri in base alla luna. Il seguitare delle stagioni è la cornice ideale per rituffarsi, almeno con la memoria, nella cultura contadina, alla riscoperta dei lavori, delle tradizioni, dei riti religiosi, della vita quotidiana. Per riscoprire quella dimensione della vita buona che anche oggi non dovremmo dimenticare: la ricerca incessante dell’equilibrio e della comunione con la madre Terra. Fabio Siviero, veronese di nascita, vicentino di adozione. Laureato in pedagogia, è docente di filosofia e storia presso il Liceo Brocchi di Bassano del Grappa. Taking as axiomatic the concept that artistic output does not simply reflect culture but also shapes it, the essays in this interdisciplinary collection take a holistic approach to the cultural fashioning of sexualities, drawing on visual art, theatre, music, and literature, in sacred and secular contexts. Although there is diversity in disciplinary approach, the interpretations and readings offered in each essay have a historical basis. Approaching the topic from the point of view of both visual and auditory media, this volume paints a comprehensive picture of artists? challenges to erotic boundaries, and contributes to new historicizing thinking on sexualities. Un giovane uomo porta una bandiera, forse più grande di lui. Accanto a sé, i compagni. Orgoglioso di stare in prima fila, allo stesso tempo sembra sovrastato, schiacciato dal compito. Renzo Donazzon è nato in una famiglia di mezzadri al confine tra Veneto e Friuli, è diventato comunista da ragazzino, si è fatto le ossa da operaio nelle piccole fabbriche del territorio, prima di entrare alla Zoppas di Conegliano. Il ’69 lo trasforma in un leader sindacale e da quel momento sale tutti i gradini della Cgil fino a diventare, tra il 1988 e il 1992, segretario regionale del Veneto. Poi succede qualcosa e torna a fare il sindacalista in periferia. Pochi anni dopo muore in seguito a un incidente stradale, senza lasciare scritto nulla di sé. Se l’elezione di Renzo a segretario regionale rappresenta il culmine di un ciclo di mobilità sociale delle classi popolari, la sua rimozione esprime il crollo di un’utopia: l’idea che gli operai possano diventare classe dirigente. Renzo Donazzon è un working-class hero, mandato avanti dal basso, da una comunità di pari, ma anche risucchiato dall’alto, dai dirigenti del sindacato e del partito che lo selezionano, lo allevano, gli fanno coraggio, per poi metterlo da parte. Questo volume è l’esito di una ricerca condotta con gli strumenti della storia orale e della microstoria intorno a una figura insieme esemplare ed enigmatica, che è diventata la lente attraverso la quale ripercorere la storia del Veneto dall’arretratezza all’industrializzazione diffusa e il modo in cui la Cgil e il Pci hanno cercato di stare dentro a quei processi, fino all’implosione del 1989-91. Non è una biografia, ma il tentativo di afferrare una soggettività e, attraverso la traiettoria di un sindacalista periferico e dei suoi compagni, indagare un problema irrisolto della cultura di sinistra e un passaggio cruciale della storia del nostro paese.

Il termine cultus (da colere: coltivare) è stato attribuito, nel corso della storia, in modo privilegiato a colui che coltivava la perfezione, la virtù, raggiungibili nell’otium, cioè nel distacco dalle preoccupazioni. Questa concezione ha determinato, per lungo tempo, una contrapposizione fra uomo ‘libero’ e uomo del popolo; gli studi e le arti liberali da una parte e l’oralità e la “cultura degli analfabeti” dall’altra. Anche il mondo popolare e contadino ha tuttavia elaborato una sua cultura con i suoi luoghi, le sue certezze, i suoi modi espressivi ed educativi. Le fiabe popolari, i canti, i proverbi, le filastrocche, il modo espressivo (il dialetto), la concezione provvidenziale e fatale delle vicende umane fanno parte di una cultura popolare e contadina, ormai scomparsa o fortemente in mutamento, qualche volta celebrata e rivissuta nel ricordo nostalgico e folcloristico.
