La Sarabanda, appartenente alla Suite per clavicembalo in Re minore numero 11 (HWV 437), è uno dei brani musicali più belli e famosi di Georg Friedrich Händel, musicista tedesco tra i più illustri del periodo barocco. Il IV movimento della Suite handeliana fu conosciuto dal grande pubblico quando il compositore statunitense Leonard Rosenman (1924-2008) lo riarrangiò inserendo nell'esecuzione archi e timpani; in tal guisa fu inserito da Stanley Kubrick nel suo capolavoro cinematografico Barry Lyndon (1975). Qui lo si può ascoltare nei momenti più emozionanti e trascinanti, dove assume un ruolo determinante, trasmettendo alle scene un'atmosfera di un fascino incredibile. Probabilmente Händel, quando compose questa indimenticabile melodia (scritta tra il 1703 ed il 1706), s'ispirò ad un'opera strumentale di Arcangelo Corelli: La Follia, ovvero una sonata (con variazioni sull'omonimo tema) inserita quale ultima dell'Op. 12 (1900) del musicista italiano. Per la stesura del brano citato, Corelli aveva preso a sua volta spunto da un tema musicale portoghese di origine popolare, nato tra il XVI ed il XVII secolo.

Among the early works of Johannes Brahms are the neo-baroque Sarabande and Gavotte. These dances have not been properly recognised as constituting a distinct Brahms' work before now, but manuscript evidence and their performance history indicate that Brahms thought of them as such in the mid-1850s. A unique study of dance forms and rhythms in the Baroque composer’s repertoire. Stylized dance music and music based on dance rhythms pervade Bach’s compositions. Although the music of this very special genre has long been a part of every serious musician’s repertoire, little has been written about it. The original edition of this book addressed works that bore the names of dances—a considerable corpus. In this expanded version of their practical and insightful study, Meredith Little and Natalie Jenne apply the same principles to the study of a great number of Bach’s works that use identifiable dance rhythms but do not bear dance-specific titles. Part I describes French dance practices in the cities and courts most familiar to Bach. The terminology and analytical tools necessary for discussing dance music of Bach’s time are laid out. Part II presents the dance forms that Bach used, annotating all of his named dances. Little and Jenne draw on choreographies, harmony, theorists’ writings, and the music of many seventeenth- and eighteenth-century composers in order to arrive at a model for each dance type. Additionally, in Appendix A all of Bach’s named dances are listed in convenient tabular form; included are the BWV number for each piece, the date of composition, the larger work in which it appears, the instrumentation, and the meter. Appendix B supplies the same data for pieces recognizable as dance types but not named as such. More than ever, this book will stimulate both the musical scholar and the performer with a new perspective at the rhythmic workings of Bach’s remarkable repertoire of dance-based music.

Dance music at the courts of seventeenth-century Germany is a genre that is still largely unknown. Dr Michael Robertson sets out to redress the balance and study the ensemble dance suites that were played at the German courts between the end of the Thirty Years War and the early years of the eighteenth century. At many German courts during this time, it was fashionable to emulate everything that was French. As part of this process, German musicians visited Paris throughout the second half of the seventeenth century, and brought French courtly music back with them on their return. For the last two decades of the century, this meant the works of Jean-Baptiste Lully, and his music and its influence spread rapidly through the courts of Europe. Extracts from Lully's dramatic stage works were circulated in both published editions and manuscript. These extracts are considered in some detail, especially in terms of their relationship to the suite. The nobility also played their part in this process: French musicians and German players with specialist knowledge were often hired to coach their German colleagues in the art of playing in the French manner, the franzsischer Art. The book examines the dissemination of dance music, instrumentation and performance practice, and the differences between the French and Italian styles. It also studies the courtly suites before the advent of Lullism and the differences between the suites of court composers and town musicians. With the possible exception of Georg Muffat's two Florilegium collections of suites, much of the dance music of the German Lullists is largely unknown; court composers such as Cousser, Erlebach, Johann Fischer and Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer all wrote fine collections of ensemble suites, and these are examined in detail.
