Excerpt from Rambles in the Island of Corsica and Sardinia: With Notices of Their History, Antiquities, and Present Condition Nearly a century ago, James Boswell made an expedition to Corsica, and was entertained with distinction by Pascal Paoli. Next to conducting Samuel Johnson to the Hebrides, the exploit of penetrating to what was then considered a sort of Ultima Thule in southern Europe, was the greatest event in the famous biographer's life; and, next to his devotion to the English sage, was the homage he paid to the Corsican chief. Soon after his return from this expedition, in 1767, Boswell printed his Journal, with a valuable account of the island; but from that time to the present, no Englishman has written on Corsica except Mr. Robert Benson, who published some short "Sketches" of its history, scenery, and people in 1825. Excerpt from Scarabs: The History, Manufacture and Religious Symbolism of the Scarabaeus, in Ancient Egypt, Ph nicia, Sardinia, Etruria, Etc It most probably ante-dated the epoch Of Mena, the first historical Egyptian king. How long before his period it existed, in the present condition Of our knowledge Of the ancient history and thought of Egypt, it is impossible to sur mise. Of the aborigines Of the land Of Egypt we do not know nor are we very likely to know, anything. Of the race, known to us as the Egyptian we can now assert with much certainty, that it was a Caucasian people, and likely came from an original home in Asia. When the invader arrived in the valley of the Nile, he appears to have been highly civilized and to have had an elevated form of religious belief. The Making Of Medieval Sardinia written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-16 with History categories.

This landmark volume combines classic and revisionist essays to explore the historiography of Sardinia’s exceptional transition from an island of the Byzantine empire to the rise of its own autonomous rulers, the iudikes, by the 1000s. In addition to Sardinia’s contacts with the Byzantines, Muslim North Africa and Spain, Lombard Italy, Genoa, Pisa, and the papacy, recent and older evidence is analysed through Latin, Greek and Arabic sources, vernacular charters and cartularies, the testimony of coinage, seals, onomastics and epigraphy as well as the Sardinia’s early medieval churches, arts, architecture and archaeology. The result is an important new critique of state formation at the margins of Byzantium, Islam, and the Latin West with the creation of lasting cultural, political and linguistic frontiers in the western Mediterranean. Contributors are Hervin Fernández-Aceves, Luciano Gallinari, Rossana Martorelli, Attilio Mastino, Alex Metcalfe, Marco Muresu, Michele Orrù, Andrea Pala, Giulio Paulis, Giovanni Strinna, Alberto Virdis, Maurizio Virdis, and Corrado Zedda.

Archaeology And History In Sardinia From The Stone Age To The Middle Ages written by Stephen L. Dyson and has been published by UPenn Museum of Archaeology this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

With one of the richest archaeological records and most complicated histories in the Mediterranean, Sardinia provides an important laboratory for studying the interaction of indigenous societies and outside forces in a partly isolated geographical context. Stephen L. Dyson and Robert J. Rowland, Jr. use both material culture and written documents to reconstruct the social and economic processes of an island society that showed both cultural creativity and continuity but responded to invasions from the Phoenicians through the Romans to the Aragonese. This first accessible reconstruction of island archaeology provides a balanced picture of the sweep of Sardinian history.

Excerpt from Cellae Trichorae and Other Christian Antiquities in the Byzantine Provinces of Sicily With Calabria and North Africa, Including Sardinia, Vol. 1 After two or three fruitless errands into Calabria and Sardinia, fruitless at any rate so far as this particular question is concerned, my attention was directed to two trefoil chapels in the central plain of Northern Tunis. A visit to these two buildings satisfied me that there is nothing Byzantine about them either in origin, in plan, or in purpose, and that they belong to the same early period in Christian history after the Peace of the Church as the monastery churches at Sohag, the chapel of the Trinity at S. Honorat, and the two chapels in the cemetery of S. Callixtus at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sea and Sardinia By D. H. Lawrence In these impressions of the Italian countryside, Lawrence transforms ordinary incidents into passages of intense beauty. Twilight in Italy is a vibrant account of Lawrence's stay among the people of Lake Garda, whose decaying lemon gardens bear witness to the twilight of a way of life centuries old. In 'Sea and Sardinia', Lawrence brings to life the vigorous spontaneity of a society as yet untouched by the deadening effect of industrialization. And 'Etruscan Places' is a beautiful and delicate work of literary art, the record of 'a dying man drinking from the founts of a civilization dedicated to life.' We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
