Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entwarf Johannes Bobrowski mit seinem 'Sarmatien' einen literarischen Raum, der einen überraschend zeitgemäßen Orientierungspunkt für die Diskussion 'östlicher' europäischer Grenzräume im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert bietet. In der aktuellen Forschung ist eine Infragestellung von Grenzen durch Begriffe wie Liminalität (Turner), dritter Raum (Bhabha) oder Ähnlichkeit (Bhatti) zu beobachten. In den hier versammelten Beiträgen geht es darum, wie Grenzräume in deutschsprachigen literarischen Texten inszeniert, intermedial reflektiert oder dekonstruiert werden, und welche Rolle das innerhalb eines bestimmten Feldes oder Diskurses spielt. Der Vergleich von Werken Musils, Celans, Sebalds oder Trojanows mit Beispielen aus der russischen, kasachischen, polnischen oder tschechischen Literatur (u.a. Babel, Tokarzcuk, Belger) eröffnet komparatistische und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf ein über Europa hinausreichendes Panorama literarischer Grenzräume. In the aftermath of WWII, Johannes Bobrowski's Sarmatia created a poetic borderland space that challenged existing borders in Central and Eastern Europe – and has continued to do so in the 20th and 21st century. Recent scholarship has increasingly begun to question borders by introducing terms such as liminality (Turner), third space (Bhabha), or similarity (Bhatti). Individual chapters in this volume discuss how borderland spaces are staged, intermedially reflected, or deconstructed in German-language literature, and what impact this might have within a particular field or discourse. In Selbstzeugnissen, Autobiografien, Tagebüchern und Briefen geben Schreibende Einblick in Alltagsbegebenheiten und Erfahrungen, Empfindungen und Gedanken und machen das Schreiben zum Gegenstand der Dokumentation, epistemischen Erkundung, (Selbst-)Reflexion und auch der psychischen Entlastung. Außerhalb dieser auf Authentizität gerichteten Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schreiben ist die literarische Produktion häufig selbst Gegenstand von Roman-, Film- und Serienhandlungen, u. a. in der Inszenierung spezifischer Schreibsituationen, -rituale und -orte wie auch unterschiedlicher Formen der Schreibblockade und -störung. Die Beiträger*innen diskutieren die kognitive, historische und gesellschaftliche Bedeutung des Schreibens und fragen aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive nach den besonderen Arrangements und Inszenierungen von Schreiben, Text/Werk und Autorschaft.In addition to questions closely related to literary production, writing as a medium of reflection is also gaining importance in other constellations. In self-testimonies, autobiographies, diaries and letters, writers provide insight into everyday occurrences and experiences, sensations and thoughts, and make writing the object of documentation, epistemic exploration, (self-)reflection and also psychological relief. Beyond these forms of engagement with writing that are aimed at authenticity, literary production itself is often the subject of the plots of novels, films and series, including the staging of specific writing situations, rituals and places as well as various forms of writer's block and writing breakdowns.

Carola Hähnel-Mesnard erörtert anhand der narrativen Werke von Lutz Seiler, Julia Schoch und Jenny Erpenbeck, wie dieser Zeitenwechsel in der Literatur reflektiert und ästhetisch verarbeitet wird. Die Autorin fragt danach, welche genuin literarischen Formen zur Darstellung der Zeiterfahrung in einem besonderen geschichtlichen Zusammenhang eingesetzt werden, wie Zeit ästhetisch inszeniert wird, auf welche kulturellen Modelle die SchriftstellerInnen zurückgreifen und inwiefern Zeitdarstellung in den Werken bedeutungstragend ist. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, a "Zeitmauer" ("time wall") (Heiner Müller) also fell in parallel. Although the clocks in East and West still presented the same time, the perception of time changed for East Germans, who were suddenly confronted with a new time order. With the help of narratives from Lutz Seiler, Julia Schoch and Jenny Erpenbeck, Carola Hähnel-Mesnard explains how this time change is reflected and transmitted aesthetically in literature. The author asks which genuine literary forms are used to present the experience of time in a particular historical context, how time is aesthetically staged, which cultural models the authors refer to and how the presentation of time is important in the works.

In recent decades, globalization has led to increased mobility and interconnectedness. For a growing number of people, contemporary life entails new local and transnational interdependencies which transform individual and collective allegiances. Contemporary literature often reflects these changes through its exploration of migrant experiences and transcultural identities. Calling into question traditional definitions of culture, many recent works of poetry and prose fiction go beyond the spatial boundaries of a given state, emphasizing instead the mixing and collision of languages, cultures, and identities. In doing so, they also challenge recent and contemporary discourses about cultural identities, fostering a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of identity-formation processes in diverse transcultural frameworks.
