Karena segala hal yang berhubungan dengan Islam ini sangat menarik untuk dijadikan objek studi, dunia Barat sejak lama menyimpan hasrat besar untuk memahami eksistensi, kecenderungan, gejolak dan arah agama besar yang sejak lama telah menunjukkan pesonanya ini melalui kajian-kajian serius yang dilakukan para Islamolog, orientalis dan belakangan Islamisis baik yang jujur maupun tendesius, yang agak obyektif atau subyektif, yang agak netral maupun yang bertujuan mendistrosi dan mengaburkan pengertian Islam atau yang ―murni demi kepentingan ilmu.‖ Dalam kajiannya itu, dunia Barat kemudian menyebutnya Islamic Studies. H.A.R Gibb menyatakan “Islam is indeed much more than a system of theology, it is a complete civilization ungkapan Gibb ini tercatat dalam bukunya Wither Islam? A Survey of Modern Movements in the Moslem World. Dengan demikian, pesatnya perkembangan studi Islam disebabkan agama ini tidak hanya memainkan perannya sebagai ajaran teologi dan spiritual belaka namun juga yang terkenal adalah peradaban yang lengkap. Dan Gerhard Endress menulis bahwasanya selain penelitian sejarah, studi Islam telah mantap sebagai disiplin keilmuan. Sebuah disiplin ilmu adalah sebuah perkembangan yang tak mungkin dihindari sebagai kekuatan sejarah. Melalui tradisi kesarjanaan yang panjang di Barat, menurut Edward Said, studi Islam, tradisi akademik tentang ketimuran atau gambaran tentang Timur telah direkonstruksi dan didominasi oleh konsepsi-konsepsi Barat yang ia sebut orientalism. Melaui orientalisme, Barat telah mengukuhkan dominasi sosial, politik dan kebudayaan selama berabad-abad atas dunia Timur. Karenanya, Timur dianggap ada karena usaha-usaha kesarjanaan Barat. ―The Orient was almost a European invetions, and had been since antiquity a place of romance, exotic being, haunting memories and landscape, remarkable experiences.” Dominasi ini baik di Amerika maupun di Eropa tampak pada perhatian Barat yang menaruh minatnya yang tinggi tentang keislaman dan ketimuran. Pada abad ke-20, minat dan dominasi itu ditunjukkan oleh pendirian Departement of Islamic Studies, Religious Studies atau Asian Studies di berbagai universitas di Barat baik di Amerika Serikat, Eropa dan Australia. Universitas-universitas seperti University of California of Los Angelos (UCLA), Chicago University, Princeton University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Yale University, Temple University, Ohio State University di Amerika Serikat; Faculty of Islamic Studies University of McGill di Kanada; SOAS London University di Inggris; Sorbone University di Perancis; Flinders University, Monash University dan Autsralian National Universtiy di Australia, menyediakan dan menyelenggarakan kajian-kajian keislaman dalam berbagai aspeknya atau studi kawasan dunia Islam dengan segala fasilitas perpustakaan yang lengkap dan metodologi yang lebih maju dibanding di negara-negara Muslim sendiri. Studi Islam (Islamic Studies), terlepas dari kecurigaan yang muncul, Buku ini akan mengulas secara lebih sistematis tentang studi Islam, agama, urgensi, tujuan, ruang lingkup, pembidangannya, dan bertujuan melakukan pendekatan atau kajian-kajian keislaman secara metodologis-akademis dan dari berbagai sudut pandang seperti fenomena Islam.
