Dans l’installation vidéo Je suis du bord, Patrick Bernier et Olive Martin proposent au visiteur deux expériences d’immersion. La première est une plongée méditative au sein du mémorial de l’Abolition de l’esclavage à Nantes, lieu de mémoire cher aux artistes, conçu comme la cale d’un navire immobilisé à fleur de Loire. Dans la seconde, le spectateur assiste à la dérive de croisiéristes européens servis par l’équipage international d’un paquebot en Méditerranée. La vie à bord défile au rythme d’une musique grave, annonciatrice d’on ne sait quelle douce et inéluctable destination. Au fil de ces navigations dans les espaces contigus et perméables de la Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz, les artistes nous confrontent à de tenaces antagonismes et aux échos contemporains de l’histoire coloniale. Le présent livre retrace la genèse de cette œuvre à travers un entretien des artistes avec Heidi Ballet. En écho au projet de Bernier & Martin, un texte de Kossi Efoui nous fait découvrir un monument nantais méconnu et oublié, la statue d’Henri le Navigateur, installée par la ville en 1986. Initiée en 2007, la programmation Satellite du Jeu de Paume est dédiée à la création contemporaine. Depuis 2015, le Jeu de Paume et le CAPC musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux organisent conjointement ce programme d’expositions, assuré dès sa création par des commissaires d’envergure internationale (Fabienne Fulchéri, María Inés Rodríguez, Elena Filipovic, Raimundas Malašauskas, Filipa Oliveira, Mathieu Copeland, Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez et Erin Gleeson). Intitulé « Notre océan, votre horizon », la neuvième édition confiée à Heidi Ballet se propose d’explorer la notion d’identité océanique – un sentiment d’appartenance façonné par une vision du monde tournée vers l’extérieur et axée sur les horizons et au-delà –, en comparaison d’une identité terrestre fondée sur la délimitation d’espaces finis. En réponse à cette proposition, Edgardo Aragón opte pour la cartographie critique, Guan Xiao se penche sur la transformation et le voyage, Patrick Bernier & Olive Martin s’intéressent aux conséquences des traversées maritimes dans l’histoire et Basim Magdy évoque des histoires secrètes de la mer. Chaque exposition est accompagnée d’une publication imaginée comme une « carte blanche » aux artistes. Conçue dans un dialogue étroit avec un studio graphique renouvelé à l’occasion de chaque édition, cette série d’ouvrages s’offre comme un espace de création autonome au sein de la programmation Satellite.

Constituée d’une vidéo et d’une série de cartes, l’œuvre d’Edgardo Aragón Mesoamerica : The Hurricane Effect propose une cartographie critique des effets du Projet d’intégration et de développement de la Mésoamérique dans l’État d’Oaxaca au Mexique. Financé par les États-Unis à hauteur de plusieurs millions de dollars, ce projet est officiellement destiné à combattre la pauvreté mais, en pratique, il profite plutôt à des sociétés étrangères et favorise une corruption endémique. Ce livre retrace la genèse de l’œuvre d’Aragón à travers un entretien de l’artiste avec Heidi Ballet, tandis que le texte de l’historien Jorge Luis Capdepont Ballina révèle la manière dont l’histoire, au travers du concept de « Mésoamérique », est invoquée comme vecteur de légitimité et de cohésion pour justifier un plan de nature économique. Sont également reproduites dix cartes coloriées par l’artiste qui montrent les géographies de la collaboration entre le Mexique et les États-Unis et illustrent le rôle respectif des partis politiques, des cartels de la drogue et des compagnies étrangères dans les retombées négatives du Projet Mésoamérique. Avec l’œuvre vidéo Weather Forecast [Prévisions météo] Guan Xiao met en lumière les évolutions d’une personne au cours d’un voyage qui s’apparentent aux fluctuations de la météo. L’artiste se demande également quelles sont les conditions nécessaires au changement du voyageur : faut-il être mobile pour évoluer, ou la sédentarité suffit-elle ? Le travail de Guan Xiao est axé sur les sens de la vue et de l’ouïe, vecteurs principaux de notre perception du monde. Cet intérêt pour l’expérience sensorielle se traduit dans la nature même de ses installations, qui s’apparentent à des environnements immersifs. Il régit aussi sa façon d’aborder l’image, avec une prédilection pour ce qu’elle véhicule à travers la couleur, la forme et le rythme. Les images que Guan Xiao juxtapose dans ses œuvres sont recueillies sur Internet et utilisées comme des ready-mades. L’artiste crée des collages qui mêlent le nouveau et l’ancien en traitant sur un même niveau tout ce qui compose le monde : objets, animaux et phénomènes naturels. En résonance avec son installation vidéo Weather Forecast [Prévisions météo], exprimant la multitude d’impressions nouvelles qui assaillent les voyageurs en les transformant – un processus aussi fluctuant que les caprices de la météo –, le livre propose en trois chapitres une série d’associations d’images se donnant comme des explications visuelles de processus perceptifs. Biochar is the carbon-rich product when biomass (such as wood, manure or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its stability in soil and superior nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. This book is the first to synthesize the expanding research literature on this topic. This is the Final Report of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its six-year investigation of the residential school system for Aboriginal youth and the legacy of these schools. This report, the summary volume, includes the history of residential schools, the legacy of that school system, and the full text of the Commission's 94 recommendations for action to address that legacy. This report lays bare a part of Canada's history that until recently was little-known to most non-Aboriginal Canadians. The Commission discusses the logic of the colonization of Canada's territories, and why and how policy and practice developed to end the existence of distinct societies of Aboriginal peoples. Using brief excerpts from the powerful testimony heard from Survivors, this report documents the residential school system which forced children into institutions where they were forbidden to speak their language, required to discard their clothing in favour of institutional wear, given inadequate food, housed in inferior and fire-prone buildings, required to work when they should have been studying, and subjected to emotional, psychological and often physical abuse. In this setting, cruel punishments were all too common, as was sexual abuse. More than 30,000 Survivors have been compensated financially by the Government of Canada for their experiences in residential schools, but the legacy of this experience is ongoing today. This report explains the links to high rates of Aboriginal children being taken from their families, abuse of drugs and alcohol, and high rates of suicide. The report documents the drastic decline in the presence of Aboriginal languages, even as Survivors and others work to maintain their distinctive cultures, traditions, and governance. The report offers 94 calls to action on the part of governments, churches, public institutions and non-Aboriginal Canadians as a path to meaningful reconciliation of Canada today with Aboriginal citizens. Even though the historical experience of residential schools constituted an act of cultural genocide by Canadian government authorities, the United Nation's declaration of the rights of aboriginal peoples and the specific recommendations of the Commission offer a path to move from apology for these events to true reconciliation that can be embraced by all Canadians.

"Conserving the Oceans: The Politics of Large Marine Protected Areas documents the efforts of activists and states to increase the pace and scale of global ocean protections, leading to a new global norm in ocean conservation of large marine protected areas exceeding 200,000 km2. Through an analysis of domestic political economies, the book explains how states have protected millions of square kilometers of ocean space while remaining highly responsive to the interests of businesses. It argues that states design environmental policies above all around two key features of a given space: (1) the composition of extractive versus non-extractive industry interests; and (2) the salience of various industry interests, defined as the degree to which businesses would suffer tangible and significant costs in response to new environmental regulations. Through an analysis of large marine protected area advocacy campaigns in Australia, Palau, and the United States, this book demonstrates how the political economy of a given marine space shapes how governments align their environmental and economic goals, sometimes strengthening conservation but more often than not undermining it. While recognizing important global progress and growing ambition to conserve ocean ecosystems, Conserving the Oceans demonstrates that even ambitious large marine protected areas have so far not fundamentally challenged a neoliberal paradigm of environmentalism that has caused considerable ecological harm"--
