Adios To Tears written by Seiichi Higashide and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-01 with Social Science categories.

Adios to Tears is the very personal story of Seiichi Higashide (1909–97), whose life in three countries was shaped by a bizarre and little-known episode in the history of World War II. Born in Hokkaido, Higashide emigrated to Peru in 1931. By the late 1930s he was a shopkeeper and community leader in the provincial town of Ica, but following the outbreak of World War II, he—along with other Latin American Japanese—was seized by police and forcibly deported to the United States. He was interned behind barbed wire at the Immigration and Naturalization Service facility in Crystal City, Texas, for more than two years. After his release, Higashide elected to stay in the U.S. and eventually became a citizen. For years, he was a leader in the effort to obtain redress from the American government for the violation of the human rights of the Peruvian Japanese internees. Higashide’s moving memoir was translated from Japanese into English and Spanish through the efforts of his eight children, and was first published in 1993. This second edition includes a new Foreword by C. Harvey Gardiner, professor emeritus of history at Southern Illinois University and author of Pawns in a Triangle of Hate: The Peruvian Japanese and the United States; a new Epilogue by Julie Small, cochair of Campaign for Justice–Redress Now for Japanese Latin Americans; and a new Preface by Elsa H. Kudo, eldest daughter of Seiichi Higashide.

Tension[s] 2020Tamworth Textile Triennial, Curator Vic McEwan.Performance, Interaction and Material Futures20/20 Vision is the standard notation used to indicate perfect vision. It bases its declaration of 'perfect' on only one thing: sharpness of vision when standing approximately six metres from an eye chart. Meanwhile, other worthwhile attributes are ignored - such as peripheral awareness, eye coordination, depth perception, focusing ability and colour vision. The saying 'hindsight is 20/20' suggests that the distance afforded by time enables us to better understand the past and that, by extension, hindsight might assist us to make better decisions about our future. But does this reflection take into consideration the diversity of perspectives required to really learn from the past?If there is one thing that hindsight has taught us, it is the danger of drawing meaning from only one perspective.Tension(s) 2020 acknowledges that the world has long been a place under various tension(s), both harmonious and dissonant. In order to bear witness to, contribute to and respond to these tensions, the triennial will focus on the future of people and place through textile as a material and human experience as materiality. By exploring other perspectives through the metaphor of tension, we ask:How could textiles consider people and place in developing new installation ideas? How might textiles collaborate with other interactive mediums to offer new perspectives? How can we articulate complex narratives through engaging textiles in performance?I hope that, through Tension(s) 2020, the materiality of our combined working practices and perspectives can be realised beyond the scope of a rather parochial, one-dimensional, 20/20 view.2020 Artists and Arts OrganisationsSoraya Abidin NSWMark SmithArts Project Australia VICDel StewartAustralian Tapestry Workshop VICGillian Bencke NSWJulie Briggs and Kelly Leonard NSW Armando Chant NSWGeorgia Chapman VICLinda Erceg TAS Anne Ferran VICDianne Firth ACTSai-Wai Foo VICTina Fox NSWErica Gray QLDGarth Knight NSWElisa Markes-Young WAJulie Montgarrett NSWDeborah Prior SAMargarita Sampson NSWJane Theau NSWTjanpi Desert Weavers WA, NTYinarr Maramali NSW

"Steam Dreams: The Japanese Public Bath plunges into the world of sentō--the history of the public bath, the importance of its preservation and the future of Japanese communal bathing culture. Through a diverse selection of works including historical artefacts, retro-pop ephemera, mural painting, contemporary photography, illustration, and local community art, Steam Dreams presents an introduction to the multifaceted sentō culture of Japan. Steam Dreams features commissioned works by Mizuki Tanaka and Toshizō Hirose, architectural illustrations by Honami Enya, historical photographs of sentō by Kimbei Kusakabe and others, as well as contemporary photographs by Kōtaro Imada, and sentō artefacts from the Mosaic Tile Museum, Tajimi. The exhibition also presents community art from the active sentō establishment Katsura-yu and various archival objects retrieved from Japanese public bathhouses from Bunkyo Youth Society of Architecture. Curated by Eloise Rapp and Simonne Goran, this exhibition gives attendees the unique chance to appreciate the progression of Japanese bath culture from over 150 years ago until now by tracing the distinct bathing practices of Meiji and Shōwa-periods such as design transitions from wooden floors to tiled interiors, the implemented gender division, and the connection back to nature through mural artistry." -- Japan Foundation, Sydney website.

Miles Davis Miles Smiles And The Invention Of Post Bop written by Jeremy Yudkin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Focusing on one of the legendary musicians in jazz, this book examines Miles Davis's often overlooked music of the mid-1960s with a close examination of the evolution of a new style: post bop. Jeremy Yudkin traces Davis's life and work during a period when the trumpeter was struggling with personal and musical challenges only to emerge once again as the artistic leader of his generation. A major force in post-war American jazz, Miles Davis was a pioneer of cool jazz, hard bop, and modal jazz in a variety of small group formats. The formation in the mid-1960s of the Second Quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams was vital to the invention of the new post bop style. Yudkin illustrates and precisely defines this style with an analysis of the 1966 classic Miles Smiles.
