Questo volume raccoglie i contributi della Giornata Internazionale di Studi organizzata nell’ambito della 16a edizione del programma Restituzioni 2013, dal Centre Jean Bérard e da Banca Intesa Sanpaolo in collaborazione con il MANN e l’Università degli Studi di Milano, in occasione del restauro di due vasi del MANN. Con l’obiettivo principale di restituire ai due vasi una unitarietà di lettura, oltre a garantirne il consolidamento e il miglioramento delle precarie condizioni di conservazione, sono stati programmati dal Laboratorio di Restauro del MANN significativi interventi conservativi, realizzati da Raffaele D’Aniello, Pasquale Festinese, Antonio Guerra, Antonio Marroccella, con la direzione di Luigia Melillo e il coordinamento di Mariateresa Operetto. Questo libro vuole rendere omaggio al sapere del collezionista, del restauratore, del vasaio e del pittore che, attraverso le loro produzioni dall’antichità ad oggi costituiscono parte del patrimonio del MANN. La sfida è stata quella di ricostruire, sulla scia di pubblicazioni recenti che presentano la storia completa di singoli vasi italioti, la biografia e l’autopsia delle opere attraverso un’analisi a 360 gradi, annullando i confini tra i periodi e le conoscenze attraverso il confronto tra i vecchi e i nuovi restauri e le indagini condotte nei documenti conservati in magazzini e archivi. A proposito di “savoir-faire antichi”, il cratere e la loutrophoros oggi esposti nella sezione Magna Grecia rappresentano straordinari documenti archeologici della qualità artigianale raggiunta dai ceramisti e ceramografi apuli nel IV secolo a.C.: a questi manufatti di pregio le comunità dell’antica Puglia si affidavano per affermare, attraverso la scelta delle forme vascolari e delle loro raffigurazioni, i valori, le credenze e le esigenze di affermazione sociale. Essi costituiscono, quindi, una fondamentale fonte di conoscenza del mondo antico: la lettura della forma e delle immagini proposte nei diversi contributi qui presentati ne mostrano la complessità e l’importanza.

This volume is the first monograph in English dedicated to the study of the Greek mythical hero Pelops. While popular in antiquity, Pelops’ popularity has since faded; this book presents a comprehensive treatment of his character and legacy. Ancient tradition held that Pelops was the son of Tantalus and the ancestor of the Atreids, Agamemnon and Menelaos, who appear in the Homeric poems as leaders of the Greek forces against Troy. After arriving in Greece from the east, Pelops was eventually worshipped in Olympia, became the eponym of the Peloponnese, and was celebrated as one of the founders of the Olympic Games. However, his character is morally problematic, his family were heavily condemned, and few tales about Pelops exist. Patay-Horváth takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of this obscure figure, presenting and analyzing written sources and depictions of Pelops, the etymology of his name, the history of his mythical family, and the afterlife of his myths. Drawing on folklore and ethnography, art and archaeology, linguistics and geography, this volume provides a detailed and accessible overview of both old and new theories about Pelops, his descendants, and his legacy. Nella prestigiosa raccolta magnogreca del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli un ruolo di spicco è rivestito dal materiale proveniente da Ruvo di Puglia, florido centro peuceta, che con i suoi ritrovamenti fu tra i protagonisti del vivace mercato d’antichità ottocentesco. Il volume raccoglie i vasi apuli a figure rosse di sola provenienza ruvese immessi nel Real Museo Borbonico, attraverso differenti acquisizioni, al fine di arricchirne le collezioni. L’indagine è stata occasione per rileggere una storia fra le più interessanti della cultura europea e presentare alla comunità scientifica, riuniti in un unico corpus, importanti esemplari della produzione ceramica italiota insieme ad altri sino ad ora inediti. Rinvenuti nelle sepolture, erano simboli di status con cui l’élite ruvestina affermava il proprio ruolo all’interno della società. Lo studio dei vasi si è focalizzato sulle caratteristiche tecniche e artigianali, sulle raffigurazioni e sui miti dipinti, un repertorio straordinario di racconti e immagini, e sulla loro relazione con il sistema ideologico delle comunità apule di V e IV secolo a.C. di cui sono efficace testimonianza.

In 2008, the Berlin Antikensammlung initiated a project with the J. Paul Getty Museum to conserve a group of ancient funerary vases from southern Italy. Monumental in scale and richly decorated, these magnificent vessels were discovered in hundreds of fragments in the early nineteenth century at Ceglie, near Bari. Acquired by a Bohemian diplomat, they were reconstructed in the Neapolitan workshop of Raffaele Gargiulo, who was considered one of the leading restorers of antiquities in Europe. His methods exemplify what was referred to as “une perfection dangereuse,” an approach to reassembly and repainting that made it difficult to distinguish what was ancient and what was modern. Bringing together archival documentation and technical analyses, this volume provides a comprehensive study of the vases and their treatment from the nineteenth century up to today. In addition to lavish illustrations, two in-depth essays on the history of the vases and on Gargiulo’s work, as well as detailed conservation notes for each object, this publication also features the first English translation of Gargiulo’s original text on his understanding as to how ancient Greek vases were manufactured. This is the companion volume to an exhibition on view at the Getty Villa, from November 19, 2014, to May 11, 2015, and then at the Antikensammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin from June 17, 2016, to June 18, 2017.
