The aim of this dissertation was to contribute to the understanding of the effectiveness of low-intensity psychological interventions in low- and middle-income countries. The first part of the dissertation presents work undertaken to determine the effectiveness of a group psychological intervention for adults, Group Problem Management Plus (gPM+), in alleviating psychological distress and symptoms of common mental disorders among Syrian refugees residing in a camp setting. The second part presents research related to the effectiveness of the Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) intervention among adolescents living in urban districts of Amman, Jordan. In both sections, results of two randomised controlled trials are presented, as well as the preliminary research looking at cultural adaptation procedures and feasibility trials of both interventions. The final section presents secondary analyses exploring additional methods of utilising data gathered during randomised controlled trials.

This volume presents clearly defined and described evidence-based positive psychology interventions (PPIs), which have been validated in multi-cultural contexts. It discusses validated PPIs which have been shown to have a significant impact in both clinical and real-world settings. From the late 1990s, there has been an upsurge in popular psychological “self-help” publications drawing from processes and principles of positive psychology. These publications are based on clinically validated PPI studies and translated in a “consumer friendly” manner. However, in these popular works the intervention methods are significantly altered from the original forms, and the contexts of the consumers are meaningfully different from those of the original study populations, the impact on outcome variables are often misinterpreted or over-inflated, and incorrect outcome variables are targeted. Original research articles also do not extensively discuss the content of the interventions, but merely present short descriptions of the PPI. As such, the intervention content cannot accurately be translated into practice. Hence, the need for this volume which discusses in depth how validated PPIs in various multi-cultural contexts work in both clinical and real-world settings.

Common mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress, are leading causes of disability worldwide. Treatment for these disorders is limited in low- and middle-income countries. This systematic review synthesizes the implementation processes and examines the effectiveness of psychological treatments for common mental disorders in adults delivered by nonspecialist providers in low- and middle-income countries. In total, 27 trials met the eligibility criteria; most treatments targeted depression or posttraumatic stress. Treatments were commonly delivered by community health workers or peers in primary care or community settings; they usually were delivered with fewer than 10 sessions over 2-3 months in an individual, face-to-face format. Treatments included common elements, such as nonspecific engagement and specific domains of behavioral, interpersonal, emotional, and cognitive elements. The pooled effect size was 0.49 (95% confidence interval = 0.36-0.62), favoring intervention conditions. Our review demonstrates that psychological treatments--comprising a parsimonious set of common elements and delivered by a low-cost, widely available human resource--have moderate to strong effects in reducing the burden of common mental disorders.
