The struggle of the Albanian people led by George Castriota Scanderbeg to defend Europe against the assault of the Ottoman Turks has been much celebrated. For a quarter of a century, from 1443 until his death in 1468, he used his military prowess to thwart the efforts of the most powerful Empire in the world at the time to subdue his tiny country. One of the true heroes of the Middle Ages in Europe, unfortunately the remarkable story of Scanderbeg remains little known outside of Albania. George Castriota defended Europe for a quarter of a century and, it can rightly be said, helped to save Western civilization from being overrun by Islam and suffering the same fate as the once mighty Byzantine Empire. This book examines the genius and remarkable achievements of Scanderbeg who helped shape the identity of the Albanian people and reveals the important contribution this small but proud nation has made to European civilization. Although the challenges have changed over the centuries, the clash of civilizations, which the history of the Albanian struggle to fend off the Islamic onslaught illustrates, continues today. As a result, it is all the more worth noting the contribution that this tiny land, led by Scanderbeg, made in the fight to preserve Western culture and civilization. Equally important is the example set by the Albanian people in ultimately harmonizing these two great civilizations. A.K. Brackob has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a specialist on the history of southeastern Europe during the Middle Ages and author of Mircea the Old: Father of Wallachia, Grandfather of Dracula.

Story of Scanderbeg in a nutshell. In the 1400s, the heroic Scanderbeg must defend Albania and Europe against the Ottoman Empire and his arch nemeses, Murad II and his son, Mehmed. Scanderbeg, after having been forced into service for Mehmed I and Murad II in Turkey, returns home to Albania. He tricks the Turkish soldiers stationed at the White Castle into leaving, and regains his rightful place on the throne. When Murad II hears this, he makes it his life's work to overthrow Scanderbeg and return Albania to being a territory in the Ottoman Empire, and use it to attack Rome and Western Europe. Murad II is never successful and his son, Mehmed makes it his mission as well. Many battles ensue, and Scanderbeg is betrayed by some of his closest friends, but still his forces refuse to yield to the Ottomans. Scanderbeg dies and it takes ten more years before Mehmed's troops are able to take the White Castle. But Mehmed fails to capture Rome. Even today, Scanderbeg's heroism is remembered by many for defending Western Europe.

Or the Prince of Albania and Epirus Scanderbeg Redivivus. While there are copious works in different literary genres and languages on Scanderbeg, this first--ever published extensive volume, Scanderbeg Redivivus, brings together plays and poems written by English and American playwrights and poets at various times. The collection offers Scanderbeg's readers, critics, and enthusiasts both fairly known and unknown plays and poems, along with short commentaries. Admittedly, whereas there are critical reviews on the early English plays on Scanderbeg, this does not appear to be the case with Charles Stearns's Scanderbeg, or the Prince of Epirus, written masterfully in heroic couplets, or William D. Eaton's Iskander, produced by Frederick B. Warde and successfully performed in many theaters in the United States during the season of 1896-1897. As regards, the poems--Maurice F. Egan's "A Ballad of Iscander--beg," George H. Murphy's "Iskander at the Bridge," Charles T. Erickson's "Scanderbeg," or Padraic Colum's "Scanderbeg"--do not seem to be mentioned in early or contemporary studies on Scanderbeg. Undoubtedly, these playwrights and poets have made significant contributions in keeping Scanderbeg's legendary life story alive. The plays and poems, reprinted in this collection as they were originally published in order to preserve their historical and literary value, deserve a new reading in our time. 2 265

A history of George Castriota Scanderbeg and his resistance to Ottoman expansion in Albania during the 15th century. From 1443 to 1468 Scanderbeg led a successful resistance to Ottoman expansion into Europe. Having conquered Constantinople in 1453, the Ottomans set their sights on Rome. This book argues that Scanderbeg's success ultimately saved Italy by delaying the planned invasion by Sultan Mehmed II until 1480-1481. Published to mark the 550th anniversary of the death of George Castriota Scanderbeg in 2018, this book commemorates the heroic struggle of the Albanian people to defend their culture and civilization for which Western Civilization owes them a debt of gratitude.

In 1443, when the Ottomans indicated they would attack Albania, Scanderbeg escaped to his homeland, abjured Islam, and formed a league of princes among the Albanian chieftains. He proclaimed himself prince of Albania. To resist the Ottomans under Sultan Muhammad II, Scanderbeg received aid at various times from Venice, Naples, Hungary, and the pope. Written by the late Harry Hodgkinson, a former naval intelligence officer who served under Ian Fleming, this engrossing and elegantly crafted book is an attempt to bring the reader closer to this famous historical figure and to set him in the dramatic context of Albania and its history."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
