She made her way to Rochester, New York; and found refuge amongst a bunch of Rastafarian dreadlocks from Jamaica; they lived in a large house on Terry Street, off Jefferson Avenue. Shortly after Lola gave birth to Scarfaces father in Rochester, Prince, a notorious drug lord from the wilderness, came in search of Lola and the baby. Having a father and a mother living together were the happiest days of Scarfaces childhood, but it did not last for long. Scarfaces father suddenly gunned down in the streets of Rochester, New York. Shortly after that, Scarfaces mother vanished from the streets of the Rochester community. López shows how Afro-Cuban writers and performers in the U.S. align Cuban black and mulatto identities, often subsumed in the mixed-race and postracial Cuban national imaginaries, with the material and symbolic blackness of African Americans and other Afro-Latinas/os. In the works of Alberto O’Farrill, Eusebia Cosme, Rómulo Lachatañeré, and others, Afro-Cubanness articulates the African diasporic experience in ways that deprive negro and mulato configurations of an exclusive link with Cuban nationalism. Instead, what is invoked is an “unbecoming” relationship between Afro-Cubans in the U.S and their domestic black counterparts.
