Scattering Ashes is a resource for Christian families confronting the reality of their loved one's gay lifestyle. Joyce Smith Helyer takes the reader on a journey that changed her life when her brother began their midnight Christmas Eve conversation with these words, "Joyce, I have something to tell you." As I waited expectantly for what he was going to say next, he paused, but then shifted the conversation. He tried again, but the same thing happened. I felt like he was trying to land an airplane in trouble and kept circling the airport looking for the best approach. His attempted landings kept falling short of the runway. A vague sense of uneasiness began to fill my mind . . . Little did I realize that my nice, "typical" Christian experience would be undergoing a significant change . . . Fear I could barely articulate almost overwhelmed me . . . Finally, I looked at my handsome, 26-year-old brother and knew the words he was having so much difficulty saying. "Ron, are you trying to tell me you're gay?" His quiet response echoed across the living room. "I thought you had it figured out."

But when repressed memories of childhood abuse by her mother arise, Rough is filled with deep resentment and hatred toward the woman who birthed her, and her dream of mending their tattered relationship shatters. Seven years later, when her mother dies, she is left with a plastic bag of her mother’s ashes and a diagnosis of PTSD. What will she do with them? Courageous and unflinchingly honest, Scattering Ashes is a powerful chronicle of letting go of a loved one, a painful past, and fear―a journey that will bring hope to others who grapple with the pain and repercussions of abuse.

As much as we may not want to admit it, death is a part of life. When Jesse Kalfel discovered that his mother wanted to be cremated rather than buried, he queried some of his friends concerning how they wanted their bodies handled after death. Many of them also expressed an interest in cremation but had not given much thought to what should be done with their ashes. In "So You're Cremated ... Now What?" Kalfel provides many commercially available scattering possibilities along with some of his own creative suggestions. Would you like to distribute your earthly remains by being packed into fireworks or have them shot into space? How about placing your ashes inside a time capsule or scattering them around exotic locales in the world? Would you like your final remains turned into a real diamond or cast into a pink flamingo lawn sculpture? Read "So You're Cremated ... Now What? Over One Hundred Creative Ways to Scatter Your Ashes and Other Useful Information" and gain insights about a serious topic written in a lighthearted manner. If you're considering cremation of your final remains, this book presents various options and provides a way to discuss the subject with loved ones.

Scattering Ashes: Stories is a collection of eight parts. From the first story "Lincoln's Face, A Reconstruction," in which an African-American make-up artist attempts to recreate the face of Abraham Lincoln, the stories began to examine the dichotomies of reality/illusion, home/dislocation, and movement/inactivity. In the second story, a killer attempts to solidify his own identity and the identities of his two brothers as he searches for his motive, his reason for killing that he cannot quite articulate. Although there is one repeating character here, a character with the same name as the author, it is theme that really connects these stories. Most powerful is the dichotomy of reality/illusion, which in literary terms is the difference between fiction and non-fiction. From "The Writing on the Back," a series of interviews in which people describe important photographs, to "The Principal's Slight Fear of Worms," in which the main character ponders the lost context of frozen images, the collection continues to deal with how to give meaning to that which is lost-those incidents where only fragmented pieces of history remain. And that theme culminates in the last story, "An Interview with Luke Southworth," in which a twenty-two-year-old Luke Southworth interviews a fifty-five-year-old Luke Southworth and the two begin talking about the difference between fiction and non-fiction. All these ideas are shadowed by the truth that fire has the ability to destroy everything, turning all physical reminders of life-our bodies, our photographs, our written words-back to ashes which then dissolve into the world.

Sam Holmes is a young, enthusiastic school teacher living an uneventful, albeit pleasant life - even if he won't admit to himself how lonely he is. Dedicated to teaching, and inspired by the kids passing through his 8th grade history class, Sam is energized by the end of the school year. Now he has the time to dedicate himself fully to training for the historic New York City Marathon - his first. But Sam's simple life is radically changed when his father suddenly passes away and the Last Will and Testament are read to him. Sam learns that his father's final wishes are unique, and as such special burden has been placed solely on Sam. To earn his inheritance, Sam's father is sending him on a quest; to travel to the places that had been significant and scatter his father's ashes at these destinations. Now, instead of a pleasant summer, Sam is thrust into a journey he neither wanted nor asked for. While fulfilling is father's wishes Sam meets Rachel Parker, a young woman who brings direction, clarity, and companionship to Sam's lonely life. As he faces the struggles of a contract dispute at work, a budding romance, and running in his first marathon, Sam Holmes must make the critical decisions that will impact the rest of his life.
