A playwright mentor of mine inspired me to craft scenes for actors over 50 of four pages or less. I tapped into my 10 minute play series and came up with 10 formidable pieces. They are for 2 characters (6 scenes), 3 characters (3 scenes) and 4 characters (1 scene). Mostly all are characters over 50 years of age (19 roles) with 6 roles under 50. Those are characters in their 40's. As we mature as actors we have to have parts we can sink our teeth into as we continue to hone our craft. These scenes will do the trick. Please take advantage of this book and pass the word along once you realize how useful these scenes are.

SHOWTIME is the follow-up book to Monologues: Dramatic Monologues For Actors. It is contains 16 hilarious comedic scenes for two actors that range from one to ten minutes in length. All of the scenes are original and are taken from selected plays, films, and television pilots from Gregory's body of work. Like Monologues, SHOWTIME was written to fill a much needed void for comedic scenes for black and minority actors; although this book was written for actors of all races. There are the many unique characteristics in this book that separates it from similar books. The characters can be performs by anyone and there are plenty of scenes for males and females, males and males, older males and younger males, and so on. There are scenes that are appropriate for middle school actors all the way to professional actors. It is the perfect book to produce a show consisting of short comedic scenes for two actors. Also, it is the perfect book for directing funny scenes or shows at high school, colleges, or professional level. SHOWTIME was written to be a comedic actor and director's dream. The characters in each scene allow the actors to explore a different character through: researching, exploring, and understanding the motivation and objective necessary to bring the character to life. For the director, it allows him/her to utilize, enhance, broaden, and develop many of their skills necessary for directing full-scale productions. As a literary resource for educators, SHOWTIME includes: a chapter on vernacular, commonly used vernacular terms, a chapter on copyright infringement, a chapter on stage terminology, a chapter on film/television terminology and more. It is an excellent resource to teach: acting, scene study, and character development. SHOWTIME is original, the characters are diverse, very funny and lots of fun for acting, directing, or teaching.

Preparing for an audition and unsure of what you want to do?The Ultimate Scene and Monologue Sourcebookis the book you've been waiting for. Unlike “scene books” that reprint 50 to 75 monologues excerpted from plays but don't include any background information, this annotated guide tells you what you really need to know about audition material from more than 300 contemporary plays. Here is how the book works. Suppose that you're looking for a dramatic male/female scene. When you scan “Part One: Play Synopses and Analyses,” you come across an entry forThe Middle of the Nightby Paddy Chayefsky. This is what you see: The Middle of the Night by Paddy Chayefsky (Samuel French) Synopsis: A kindly 53-year-old widower falls in love with a 23-year-old woman who is unhappily married to a musician. No one in their circle of acquaintances approves of this union, but their love is true. Analysis: Excellent human drama, frequently touching. Actors who play the widower need to have a good feel for New York City/Brooklyn speech patterns. This sensitivity isn't as essential for the part of the woman. All levels. Scenes/Monologues: Male Monologues (1), Female/Female Scenes (1), Male/Female Scenes (2) In addition to basic information about the play (author and publisher), the entry provides you with the story line, a critique of the play, and the number of audition-worthy monologues and scenes it contains. If the description of this particular play piques your interest, your next step is to turn to “Part Six: Male/Female Scenes” for specifics about the selection. This is what you'll see there: The Middle of the Night by Paddy Chayefsky (Samuel French) Drama: Act II, Scene 2, pp. 40-44; The Manufacturer (53) and The (23). After an unsatisfactory attempt at lovemaking, The Manufacturer feels awful that he wasn’t able to perform ually. The is very understanding. He then asks her to marry him. The actor playing The Manufacturer must have a good feel for regional New York speech patterns. This skill is less critical for the actress playing The . Start, The Manufacturer: “I’m sorry, Betty.” End, The Manufacturer: “Oh, my sweet , I love you so much you don’t know. If you change your mind tomorrow, I won’t be angry with you. I won’t lie to you, Betty. I’m afraid.” This entry tells you what type of scene this is (dramatic), where you'll find the selection (act, scene, and page numbers), the length of the scene, the names and ages of the characters, the context in which the characters are speaking, and the first and last lines of the scene. If the material seems appropriate, all you have to do is get a copy of the play and get to work. BecauseThe Ultimate Scene and Monologue Sourcebookenables you to make informed decisions about the suitability of more than 1,000 monologues and scenes-which you can find easily through the book's extensive cross indexes—you’ll gain a critical edge in the auditioning process.

I have personally compiled and edited this collection of 33 Shakespearean scenes specifically for aspiring female actors to study as well as enjoy. The scenes within this book are most suited to older, teenage actors, who have already begun to acquire some of the technical skills necessary to perform Shakespeare's wonderfully drawn, young adult female characters. These scenes are suitable for a range of acting exams and awards as well as for auditions and festivals. I have tried and tested these scenes with numerous students over the years with great success and more importantly, they have thoroughly enjoyed working on them. I have not provided guidelines as to how to perform these scenes. This is something for the individual performer to explore and what is what will make your performance individual. However, I do strongly believe, it is crucial to play characters within ones' playing range. As a developing actor, in your late teens and beyond, now is the time to tackle the more demanding female characters which Shakespeare has so brilliantly created. Continue to build your vocal skills and acting technique systematically. In this way your performances will have the necessary depth and will be exciting to watch. Learn to discover your character's subtext and objectives. This will enable your characters to spring to life and hence, help your audience believe in you. Methodical preparation will pay dividends when exploring these fascinating characters. I hope you enjoy working on them.
