Writing is finally about one thing: going into a room alone and doing it, putting words on paper that have never been in quite that way before. (William Goldman, award-winning author and screenwriter) The northeastern section of the United States, specifically Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont, offers us some of the richest history in our nation. There is a plethora of well-known geographical areas and individuals that and who have been a significant influence on our country's great history. In addition, there are many not-so-well-known geographical areas and individuals that and who have also made such remarkable contributions. Because of what seems to be a modern-day lack of knowledge and appreciation for our country's history, including a recent trend to erase documented records of actual historical events and statues of prominent individuals, I have decided to compose several short stories highlighting both well-known and not-so-well-known geographical areas and individuals from the northeastern section of the United States, that and who have made significant contributions to our great nation's history. I have chosen to present such information in a fictional short story format, just as several very early American writers did, which is described within the introduction to a compendium entitled Great American Short Stories, published by the Fall River Press of New York City. According to the publisher, "Americans have been writing short stories for almost as long as Americans have been writing fiction...in which...writers strove to capture the character of their fledgling country." In addition, the publication mentioned that writers like Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allen Poe used the short story format because it "showed itself to be adaptable to a wide variety of themes and approaches that might not have been executed as well at novel length...and that found it the perfect tool for turning folklore and superstitions...into literary tall tales." In addition, I have selected to utilize the short story format as the result of being influenced by one of our country's most prolific authors, Stephen King. Although mostly known for his novels, Stephen King felt that short stories were too much forgotten. He authored many short stories himself and stated that: "The leap of faith necessary to make the short story happen has gotten particularly tough in the last few years; these days it seems that everything wants to be a novel." He also wrote that: "A short story is a different thing altogether--a short story is like a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger." Whether or not today's readers have short attention spans, I feel that having utilized a short story structure has allowed me to present important historical facts and my thoughts in a most concise "quick kiss" format, thus enticing the public to be more inclined to read about or great nation's history. And since Stephen King also wrote that "Fiction is the truth inside the lie," all my short stories are a combination of true historical and scientific facts as well as made-up scenarios or storylines. Finally, although the main characters and storylines in my short stories are fictional, the facts related to the geographical areas, historical individuals, and scientific facts are real.

This book examines the role of Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and follow-up clinics in addressing the complex developmental, behavioral, social, and medical needs of at-risk infants through early intervention and medical subspecialties. It describes the necessary functional components of follow-up clinics and challenges in establishing and running multidisciplinary clinics in an area of difficult heath care financing. Chapters provide essential guidelines for determining which neonates will need follow-up care, evaluating for neurodevelopmental delays and medical and behavioral impairment and disability, and estimating how long intervention and further follow-up will be required. Chapters also discuss organization, staffing, funding, testing protocols, and coordination with other programs and care facilities, particularly early intervention and the medical home. In addition, the book offers best practices for fostering optimal development for individual infants and high-risk populations while raising standards for neonatal care and creating a smooth transition to appropriate subsequent care. Topics featured in this book include: Developmental care in the nursery. Utilizing neonatal brain imaging to predict neurodevelopmental outcomes of NICU infants. Genetic considerations in infants with congenital anomalies. The HRIF clinic organization model. Issues common in neurodevelopmental testing of premature infants. The impact of environmental risks, such as parental distress and in-utero drug exposure, to infant neurodevelopment. Follow-Up for NICU Graduates is a must-have resource for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in developmental psychology, pediatrics, neuroscience, obstetrics, nursing, and related disciplines.

This book explores the rich history and current state of the Latina, Latino, Latinx, Latine, Hispanic, or of Spanish Origin+ (LHS+) community’s representation, activism, and leadership within American medicine. It meets the demand for a reference that highlights both the underrepresentation and growth of the LHS+ community in medicine, especially as the LHS+ population now represents the largest non-white ethnic group in the United States. It examines the LHS+ community’s unique health issues and disparities, its ongoing efforts to address such health issues, and its approaches and challenges to developing generations of physicians and healthcare leaders. An Open-Access reference and Sustainable Development Goals Series volume, this book serves as an informative and inspirational resource for educational programming, drafting of policies and procedures, and institutional strategic planning. Across 16 chapters, LHS+ community members and leaders share their unique experiences in pursuing medical careers, using compelling narratives crafted to inspire more LHS+-identified college students to become healthcare professionals and leaders themselves. Additionally, chapters describe several ways in which non-LHS+ identified colleagues can better prepare themselves and their respective institutions to advance health equity for LHS+ communities, support LHS+ learners at all stages of medical education, and bolster current and future LHS+ faculty and senior academic leaders. Latino, Hispanic, or of Spanish Origin+ Identified Student Leaders in Medicine: Recognizing More Than 50 Years of Presence, Activism, and Leadership is a unique and timely book meant to unite and empower current and future physicians through service, mentorship, and education for the benefit of historically underserved communities in the U.S. and beyond.

Neuroinflammation And Neurodegeneration written by Phillip K. Peterson and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-08 with Medical categories.

State of the art reviews by experts in the fields of neuroscience, immunology, microbiology/infectious diseases and pharmacology addressing the convergence of the immune system (neuroinflammation) and the loss of neurons (neurodegeneration). Many of the diseases that are discussed in the book are of epidemic proportion, e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, viral encephalitides and substance abuse. In addition to discussions of the involvement of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in these disorders, scientific reviews are presented on the cells and mediators that participate in defense of and damage to the nervous system. With rare exception, no or inadequate treatment exists for the diseases discussed in this book. An underlying premise of the book is that understanding of their shared pathogenic mechanisms will lead to improved therapies. Given the rapid evolution of the field of Neuroimmune Pharmacology, readers will find this book to be the most timely and authoritative reference on the subject of each of its chapters.

Getting Into Medical School written by Sanford J. Brown and has been published by Barrons Educational Services this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-01 with Study Aids categories.

Getting into medical school is difficult, even for students with excellent college undergraduate records. Today, only about one-third of all students who apply to medical college are accepted—a statistic that emphasizes the vital importance of well-focused preparation on the part of medical school candidates. Getting into Medical School, now in its new twelfth edition, has gained a well-earned reputation as a time-proven source of sound advice and information on how medical school candidates can improve their chances for admission. Written by a medical doctor who is also an experienced student advisor, and updated to reflect today’s medical school environment, this book emphasizes the importance of attaining a good score on the standardized MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). It also guides applicants through the arduous process of preparing the medical school application and advises them on how to make a good impression when invited for that all-important personal interview. The book concludes with a detailed medical school directory that lists up-to-date tuitions and fees, academic requirements, and application and enrollment information for more than 170 accredited medical and osteopathic colleges across the United States. Also included is a list of Web sites that provide helpful information to medical school candidates.
