Die Arbeit untersucht die Rolle und Bedeutung von Symbolen in psychologischer Beratung und Therapie. Symbole werden in psychologischer Beratung und Therapie in großem Maße sowohl in der Diagnostik als auch in der Behandlung eingesetzt. Um sich diesem Thema zu nähern, wird in einem ersten Schritt erörtert, was unter einem Symbol zu verstehen ist, woraufhin unterschiedliche Ansichten bzgl. der Wirksamkeit von Symbolarbeit in der Psychologie demonstriert werden und deshalb näher auf die kulturgeschichtliche Entwicklung des Symbols eingegangen wird. Es werden ‘Diagnostische Verfahren‘ inhaltlich vorgestellt und dabei die Verwendung von Symbolen in der psychologischen Praxis dargelegt und deren Vor- und Nachteile erörtert. Die Arbeit schließt mit Deutungen von Praxisbeispielen der Psychologie ab, die die Anwendung von Symbolen in der Beratung und Therapie veranschaulichen.
