Derzeit erlebt das Baltikum politisch und kulturell eine Auferstehung. Die Landstriche zwischen Königsberg und St. Petersburg gewinnen wieder an Kontur. Einst hatte dieser vor allem von Deutschen geprägte Kulturraum eine europäische Brückenfunktion inne, bevor er in den Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts unterging. Auch das kulturelle Erbe in den Bibliotheken, Archiven und Museen wurde in die Vernichtung hineingezogen. Eine Rekonstruktionsarbeit größeren Ausmaßes ist zu leisten, um die zerrissenen Fäden der Überlieferung wieder zusammenzufügen. Dieser Aufgabe widmet sich Klaus Garber im vorliegenden Band. Systematisch wertet er die alten Kataloge und sonstigen Zeugnisse aus und fragt nach dem Verbleib der einstigen Schätze. Erstmals seit 1945 können so Profile der baltischen Bibliotheks-, Archiv- und Museumslandschaft aus der Vorkriegszeit sichtbar und zerstreute Bestände zusammengeführt werden. Die Rückkehr des Baltikums als eines geistigen Schmelztiegels im alten Europa wird damit wieder greifbar.

Chajim H. Steinthal (1823-1899) was one of the most important philosophical linguists and teachers of the āScience of Judaismā. His multilayered and diverse scholarly works sprang from the solid foundation of an exceptionally broad and comprehensive education. Among other things, together with Moritz Lazarus he founded the discipline of Völkerpsychologie (psychology of nations). Steinthal taught mainly at the University of Berlin and the Hochschule (later Lehranstalt) für die Wissenschaft des Judentums.
