Was ist Antipolitik, wie entsteht Antipolitik und wie ist ihr Verhältnis zur Parlamentarischen Demokratie? Stellt sie vielleicht sogar eine Gefahr für die Parlamentarische Demokratie dar? Die vorliegende Untersuchung diskutiert diese Fragen mit Rückgriff auf eine historische Analyse, nämlich am Beispiel des Idealisten und Philosophen Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, der sich mit seinen Überlegungen sehr nah am heutigen Zeitgeist antipolitischer Strömungen bewegt und eine soziologische Einordnung ermöglicht. Wenn antipolitischen Bewegungen der Sprung in die institutionalisierte Politik gelingt, wie etwa in Italien der "Fünf-Sterne-Bewegung" (Mo Vimento 5 Stelle, M5S) oder auch der deutschen Piratenpartei und AFD in den letzten Jahren, verlieren sie ihre Antipolitische Legitimität und Dynamik. Sie werden zum Teil des politischen Systems. Das aktuellste Beispiel ist die Wahl von Donald Trump zum nächsten Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Er hatte es geschafft u.a. mit einfachen Schlagworten, wie "Amerika First", sich zum Kopf einer Antipolitischen Bewegung zu machen und tatsächlich Betroffene, diffus Unzufriedene und Rassisten für sich zu mobilisieren. Für die Parlamentarische Demokratie sind antipolitische Bewegungen eine ernst zu nehmende und anhaltende Herausforderung, zumal der Trend des antipolitischen Protests zukünftig vermutlich eher zunehmen als abnehmen wird.

Kant declared that philosophy began in 1781 with his Critique of Pure Reason. In 1806 Hegel announced that philosophy had now been completed. Eckart Förster examines the reasons behind these claims and assesses the steps that led in such a short time from Kant's "(Bbeginning" to Hegel's "(Bend." He concludes that, in an unexpected yet significant sense, both Kant and Hegel were indeed right. The Twenty-Five Years of Philosophy follows the unfolding of a key idea during this exceptionally productive period: the Kantian idea that philosophy can be scientific and, consequently, can be completed. Förster's study combines historical research with philosophical insight and leads him to propose a new thesis. The development of Kant's transcendental philosophy in his three Critiques, Förster claims, resulted in a fundamental distinction between "(Bintellectual intuition" and "(Bintuitive understanding." Overlooked until now, this distinction yields two takes on how to pursue philosophy as science after Kant. One line of thought culminates in Fichte's theory of freedom (Wissenschaftslehre), while the other--and here Förster brings Goethe's significance to the fore--results in Goethe's transformation of the Kantian idea of an intuitive understanding in light of Spinoza's third kind of knowledge. Both strands are brought together in Hegel and propel his split from Schelling. Förster's work makes an original contribution to our understanding of the classical era of German philosophy--an expanding interest within the Anglophone philosophical community.

In tracing Friedrich von Schelling's long philosophical development, John Laughland examines in particular his disentanglement from German idealism and his reaction, later in life, against Hegel. He argues that this story has relevance beyond the facts themselves and that it explains much about the direction philosophy took in the century between the French Revolution and the rise of Communism. Schelling's development turned principally on the related questions of human liberty and the creation. Following a sharp disagreement with his old friend Hegel over the Phenomenology in 1807, Schelling wrote a short but brilliant essay on human freedom in 1809, after which he never published another word. In the remaining decades of his life (d. 1854) Schelling developed in an increasingly conservative and Christian direction, preoccupied with the relationship between Christianity and metaphysics. In numerous lectures and unpublished works, he attacked what he saw as the hubris and artificiality of Hegelian rationalism. However the path against which Schelling warned was the one which philosophy finally took. Schelling was determined to show how philosophy (especially ontology) explained and was explained by Christianity, and that both had been damaged by modern rationalism. But Hegel’s Marxist epigones who attended his later lectures scoffed and Hegelianism triumphed. This is an elegantly written and engaging study in the history of ideas of a philosopher on the losing side.
