2.100km pilgerte ich 2021 zu Fuß in 104 Tagen von Leipzig nach Rom - dem Lockdown, schlechtem Wetter und Blasen an den Füßen zum Trotz. Dieses Tagebuch beschreibt meinen Weg von der heimischen Haustür bis zur Papstaudienz in Rom. Es erzählt von den Herausforderungen eines jeden Tages, von bildschönen Landschaften und steinigen Wegen, von inspirierenden Weggefährten und Momenten des Zweifels, von ergreifenden Begegnungen und kleinen Entdeckungen entlang des Weges; kurz: von allem, was die Faszination des Pilgerns ausmacht! Der Pilgerweg nach Rom war nicht mein Erster. Bereits 2015 bin ich den Jakobsweg 3.500km von Görlitz nach Santiago de Compostela gepilgert. Meine Erfahrungen habe ich in dem Buch "Jakobsmuscheln à la Bruni" beschrieben. Schon damals hat Jean-Pierre, ein Weggefährte, zu mir gesagt: "Nach dem Camino ist vor dem Camino." Wie recht er hatte. Als ich nach einem halben Jahr wieder zu Hause ankam, war schnell klar: Der Pilgervirus hatte mich erfasst. Rom ruft! Hier liegt nun also mein zweiter Pilgerbericht vor- für alle, die selbst gern Pilgern, für alle Wanderwütigen und die, die es noch werden wollen.

Martin Heidegger is perhaps the twentieth century's greatest philosopher, and his work stimulated much that is original and compelling in modern thought. A seductive classroom presence, he attracted Germany's brightest young intellects during the 1920s. Many were Jews, who ultimately would have to reconcile their philosophical and, often, personal commitments to Heidegger with his nefarious political views. In 1933, Heidegger cast his lot with National Socialism. He squelched the careers of Jewish students and denounced fellow professors whom he considered insufficiently radical. For years, he signed letters and opened lectures with ''Heil Hitler!'' He paid dues to the Nazi party until the bitter end. Equally problematic for his former students were his sordid efforts to make existential thought serviceable to Nazi ends and his failure to ever renounce these actions. This book explores how four of Heidegger's most influential Jewish students came to grips with his Nazi association and how it affected their thinking. Hannah Arendt, who was Heidegger's lover as well as his student, went on to become one of the century's greatest political thinkers. Karl Löwith returned to Germany in 1953 and quickly became one of its leading philosophers. Hans Jonas grew famous as Germany's premier philosopher of environmentalism. Herbert Marcuse gained celebrity as a Frankfurt School intellectual and mentor to the New Left. Why did these brilliant minds fail to see what was in Heidegger's heart and Germany's future? How would they, after the war, reappraise Germany's intellectual traditions? Could they salvage aspects of Heidegger's thought? By going back to the Italian humanist tradition and aspects of earlier Greek and Latin thought, Ernesto Grassi develops a conception of rhetoric as the basis of philosophy. Grassi explores the sense in which the first principles of rational thought come from the metaphorical power of the word. He finds the basis for his conception in the last great thinker of the Italian humanist tradition, Giambattista Vico (1668-1744). He concentrates on Vico's understanding of imagination and the sense of human ingenuity contained in metaphor. For Grassi, rhetorical activity is the essence and inner life of thought when connected to the metaphorical power of the word. Originally published in English in 1980, Rhetoric as Philosophy has been out of print for some time. In his foreword to this reprint edition, Burke scholar Timothy W. Crusius rues the lack of concentrated attention to Grassi because "what he had to say about rhetoric is at least as significant as, for example, what Kenneth Burke taught us".
