Este trabalho visa compreender a schottisch, seja como dança, seja como música, na cultura brasileira da segunda metade do século XIX. São analisadas fontes bibliográficas que tratam desse tema e é apresentada a sua contextualização histórico-social. O trabalho se desenvolveu por meio da busca em acervos de partituras e da pesquisa em jornais da época, com suas crônicas, propagandas de bailes, concertos e partituras à venda. Isso acarretou a identificação de vários sujeitos, anônimos ou não, entre músicos, dançarinos, políticos e empresários que contribuíram para o desenvolvimento da schottisch no Brasil, desde a sua chegada ao ambiente aristocrático, em 1850, até se encontrar com os músicos de choro da passagem do século XIX para o século XX. São discutidos aspectos de aporte cultural capazes de inserir gêneros europeus na música popular brasileira e são analisadas algumas composições para compreender aspectos técnicos e teóricos que demonstrem as transformações musicais ocorridas no decorrer das décadas. Por fim, é reconhecido que a schottisch passou por diversas fases que a mantêm viva até hoje entre os chorões, identificando-se, ainda, que foi a schottisch que deu origem ao xote, gênero de música e dança presente em todas as regiões do Brasil.
