Das Handbuch der Schreiborte erschließt die literarische Produktion des deutschen Mittelalters erstmals auf der Grundlage eines umfassenden topographischen Zugriffs. Es bietet einen Querschnitt, der die Schreibtätigkeit und die literarischen Zentren, ausgehend von den beteiligten Orten – darunter Regensburg, Fulda, Straßburg, Wien u.v.m. – aufschlüsselt. Gegenstand sind die deutschsprachigen Texte an ihrem Entstehungs- und ihrem Rezeptionsort, zum Teil unter Einbeziehung des lateinischen oder weiteren anderssprachigen Schrifttums. So bündelt das Nachschlagewerk erstmals die Ergebnisse der Überlieferungs-, Handschriften-, Skriptoriums- und Provenienzforschung einerseits und der Gönnerforschung und literarischen Interessenbildung andererseits. Um den Bereich auf eine Epoche deutlicher Zentrierung einzugrenzen, ist der Überblick auf das Früh- und Hochmittelalter bis ungefähr 1350 begrenzt. Es entsteht ein diachrones Profil von Orten und Zentren, das als wesentliche Grundlage der Regionalliteraturgeschichte dient und ebenso für Mediävisten wie für Historiker von Interesse ist.

Pomeranian is the West Germanic language spoken by European emigrants who went from Farther Pomerania (present-day Poland) to Brazil in the period 1857–1887. This language is no longer spoken in cohesive societies in Europe, but the language has survived and is in remarkably good shape on this language island in the tropical state of Espirito Santo. This monograph offers the first synchronic grammar of this language. After a historical introduction, the book offers a systematic description of its phonology, morphology and syntax. The language is contrasted with its European sisters, more particularly High German, Dutch, and Frisian. It highlights various phenomena that will presumably contribute to the ongoing theoretical debate on the Germanic verbal system. It provides new data on cluster V2, do-support, and the two infinitives. As to the infinitival syntax, the language shows remarkable parallels to the system of Frisian. As to the rich Pomeranian system of subtractive morphology, the phonological account that is offered, will be important for the ongoing discussion of the abstractness of phonological representations. Finally, Pomeranian is a welcome addition to the set of languages on which our etymological understanding of West Germanic is based.

This volume brings together key findings of the long-term research project ‘Religious Individualisation in Historical Perspective’ (Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University). Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios. Furthermore, the volume challenges prevalent views that regard religions primarily as collective phenomena and provides nuanced perspectives on the appropriation of religious agency, the pluralisation of religious options, dynamics of de-traditionalisation and privatisation, the development of elaborated notions of the self, the facilitation of religious deviance, and on the notion of dividuality.

During the European Middle Ages, diagrams provided a critical tool of analysis in cosmological and theological debates. In addition to drawing relationships among diverse areas of human knowledge and experience, diagrams themselves generated such knowledge in the first place. In Diagramming Devotion, Jeffrey F. Hamburger examines two monumental works that are diagrammatic to their core: a famous set of picture poems of unrivaled complexity by the Carolingian monk Hrabanus Maurus, devoted to the praise of the cross, and a virtually unknown commentary on Hrabanus's work composed almost five hundred years later by the Dominican friar Berthold of Nuremberg. Berthold's profusely illustrated elaboration of Hrabnus translated his predecessor's poems into a series of almost one hundred diagrams. By examining Berthold of Nuremberg's transformation of a Carolingian classic, Hamburger brings modern and medieval visual culture into dialogue, traces important changes in medieval visual culture, and introduces new ways of thinking about diagrams as an enduring visual and conceptual model.
