This edited volume focuses on the problematic engendering of classical and contemporary sociological theory, addressing questions such as: How were the foundations of sociological theory shaped by an implicit masculinity? Did classical sociology simply reflect or actively construct theories of sexual difference? How were alternative accounts of the social suppressed in sociology's founding moments? Feminist interventions in sociology are still seen as marginal to sociological theorizing. This collection challenges this truncated vision of sociological theory. In part one, contributors interrogate the classical canon, exposing the masculinist assumptions that saturate the conceptual scaffolding of sociology. In part two, contributors consider the long-standing and problematic relationship between sociology and feminism, retrieving voices marginalized within or excluded from canonical constructions of sociological theory. In part three, contributors engage with key contemporary debates, explicitly engendering accounts of the social. Engendering the Social is unique in that it not only critically interrogates sociological theory from a feminist perspective, but also embarks on a politics of reconstruction, working creatively at the interface of feminist and sociological theory to induce a more adequate conceptualisation of the social. During the late nineteenth century the city of Berlin developed such a reputation for lawlessness and sexual licentiousness that it came to be known as the "Whore of Babylon." Out of this reputation for debauchery grew an unusually rich discourse around prostitution. In Berlin Coquette, Jill Suzanne Smith shows how this discourse transcended the usual clichés about prostitutes and actually explored complex visions of alternative moralities or sexual countercultures including the "New Morality" articulated by feminist radicals, lesbian love, and the "New Woman." Combining extensive archival research with close readings of a broad spectrum of texts and images from the late Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, Smith recovers a surprising array of productive discussions about extramarital sexuality, women’s financial autonomy, and respectability. She highlights in particular the figure of the cocotte (Kokotte), a specific type of prostitute who capitalized on the illusion of respectable or upstanding womanhood and therefore confounded easy categorization. By exploring the semantic connections between the figure of the cocotte and the act of flirtation (of being coquette), Smith’s work presents flirtation as a type of social interaction through which both prostitutes and non-prostitutes in Imperial and Weimar Berlin could express extramarital sexual desire and agency.

In frühen Texten zur Soziologie gilt die Geschlechtertrennung als Grundpfeiler sozialer Ordnung und Gesellschaft als ein Naturverhältnis. Nicht zuletzt im Aufeinandertreffen von Frauenbewegungen und Soziologie bildeten sich schon mit den Klassikern sehr verschiedene (theoretische) Umgangsweisen mit der Kategorie Geschlecht aus, die das Verhältnis von Natur und Gesellschaft neu und unterschiedlich erfassten. In der weiteren Entwicklung rückte immer mehr die Geschlechtertrennung als solche ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Dabei haben sich die Linien in Richtung eines genuin soziologischen Zugangs verschoben, in dem ‚Natur’ als kulturell gedeutete ihren Platz findet, aber der Analyse nicht vorgelagert sein kann. Die Autorinnen zeigen auf, wie Geschlecht in der Soziologie thematisiert wurde, welche Möglichkeiten die Soziologie bietet, Geschlecht zum Gegenstand statt zum Ausgangspunkt oder Medium von Analysen zu machen und an welche Grenzen wir stoßen, wenn wir die Paradoxie von Gleichheit und Differenz aufzubrechen versuchen.
