Ein Forschungsauftrag der Deutschen Afrika-Gesellschaft erlaubt mir, diese Arbeit über das politische Leben in einigen Ländern Afrikas vorzulegen. Das Buch sollte rasch fertiggestellt werden. Zweifellos ist es nötig, das sprunghaft ge steigerte Interesse der deutschen Öffentlichkeit für Afrika durch dokumentarische Veröffentlichungen zu befriedigen. Sie sollen nicht nur die journalistische Be richterstattung in Presse, Funk und Fernsehen ergänzen (und gelegentlich be richtigen), sondern vor allem den vielen Deutschen, die sich beruflich für Afrika zu interessieren haben, hieb- und stichfeste Information an die Hand geben: den Journalisten selbst, aber auch den Technikern, Wirtschaftsexperten, Lehrern und nicht zuletzt den Politikern, die über das Geld zu verfügen haben, das der deut schen Staatskasse in steigender Menge für die Entwicklung Afrikas und die In formation über Afrika abverlangt wird. Ein Beitrag zur dokumentierten Information will dieses Buch sein. Ich habe mich bemüht, möglichst oft den Afrikanern selbst das Wort zu geben, und dafür in Kauf genommen, daß der Umfang des Buches wuchs und der Fluß der Dar stellung litt. Die knappe Zeit, die mir für Materialsammlung und Ausarbeitung zur Verfügung stand, erklärt die geographische Abgrenzung; sie ist meines Erachtens zu rechtfertigen, da das Schwarze Afrika französischer Prägung durch seine Assoziation an die Europäische Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft (zusammen mit Madagas kar, dem bisher belgischen Kongo und dem bisher italienischen Somalia) in den kommenden Jahren besonders engen Kontakt zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland finden dürfte.
