Excerpt from Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 2 Having recently had occasion to study the habits and anatomy of the English Marten Cats, Mustela martes and Mustela foina, and having looked into the history of these animals and of certain other carnivora which have borne the same name as they in ancient and modern times, I have come to think that the latter of the two creatures specified namely, the white-breasted marten, Mustela foina, was the animal which the ancient Greeks and Romans employed for the same domestic purposes for which we employ the Felis domesticus; whilst this latter animal has been employed as at present in Western Europe for probably a considerably longer period than the last thousand years. Other writers to whom I have referred, and amongst them notably Dureau de la Malle, have adopted the former of these conclusions; but upon premises more or less inadequate or incorrect or both. I am well assured that this question has for the philosophic naturalist much more than a merely archaeological interest, for in the resolving of it we may have light cast upon the working of the principle which Mr. Darwin has shown to be more potent than any other in regulating the distribution of species, and which Van Beneden, with the well-known physiological aphorisms of Wolff and Treviranus before his eyes, has formulated in the words, 'les etres qui composent une Faune sont solidaires entre eux comma les organes d'un etre vivant.' Excerpt from Papers and Addresses, Vol. 2 of 3 The parasites of human beings include members both of the animal and of the vegetable kingdoms. The animal parasites belong to the divisions protozoa, worms, and arthropods; the vegetable parasites, to the bacteria and fungi. The term pathogenic microorganisms, according to common although somewhat arbitrary usage, includes all of the vegetable parasites and only the protozoa among the animal parasites. The infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms. The special characters of the microorganisms which cause the infectious diseases considered in this work are described in the articles treating of these diseases. It is thought desirable to bring together in a separate article certain general considerations concerning infection. The most important advances in our knowledge of infectious diseases have come from the study of bacteria. Some knowledge of the general biology of bacteria is essential to an understanding of pathogenic bacterial species and of their relations to disease. The most important protozoa at present known to be concerned in the causation of human diseases are the malarial plasmodium and the dysenteric amoeba. These are described in connection with their respective diseases. An account of the general biology of protozoa, although of increasing interest and importance to human medicine, would not in the present imperfect state of our knowledge of this subject materially further the aim of this article. Pathogenic fungi are of comparatively little importance to internal human medicine. General Biology of Bacteria. Morphology and Classification The name "bacteria," signifying staves, is a convenient but etymologically incorrect one for the group of microorganisms also called or included under schizomycetes or fission fungi, schizophytes, microphytes, protophytes, and, in common parlance, microbes or germs. The chief reason for regarding bacteria as members of the vegetable kingdom is that they are believed to have more morphological and physiological properties in common with the simplest undoubted plants that with the lowest animals. They are more closely allied to the lower algae called schizosporeae or schizophyceae than to the true fungi. Excerpt from An Index to Legal Periodical Literature, 1887-1899, Vol. 2 The general plan of this volume is the same as that of my Index pub lished in 1888, a portion of the Preface to which is now reprinted. In one respect, however, this volume difi'ers, not in plan, but in result, from the former; and that is it contains many more references to articles relating to Legal Science in general, and many more references to articles relating to Political Science, to Economics, and to Sociology for in the years since the former Index was compiled, the Bar Associations organized in many States have published a great number of addresses, papers, and reports upon general, rather than technical, subjects connected with the law; and since that time also there have appeared numerous periodical publications devoted to subjects which have an important, if not direct, bearing upon Law and Legislation. As Professor Hadley, now President of Yale University, said in a recent address: The scientific study of the law has had and still has a close affiliation with the scientific study of political economy. This affiliation between economics and jurisprudence is manifest alike in their data, their methods, and their conclusions. The fundamental datum of modern economics is property right. This is also the datum and starting point of a large part of our legal reasoning. The method of the economist is a combination of the historical and the deductive. He studies the pre cedent by which property right has been established on the one hand, and deduces the consequences arising from such property rights on the other hand. This combination is also characteristic of the methods of the Judiciary; the chief difference between economists and court being that the economist considers how the individual judgment will act under the given conditions, while the court considers how the public judgment will act. The scope of the present Index is therefore somewhat wider than that of the first volume. It includes articles upon Law, Legislation, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, and Legal Biography in all journals in the English language published since the beginning of the year°1887 down to the beginning of the present year. Excerpt from Borderland Studies, Vol. 2: Miscellaneous Addresses and Essays Pertaining to Medicine and the Medicinal Profession, and Their Relations to General Science and Thought Repeated inquiries for reprints of these essays, addresses and lectures, most of which have long been "out of print," have seemed to justify their present gathering and republication. The second and third chapters are included for the peculiar reason that their suggestion has been advocated faultily, and without a hint of credit or origin, by some in high authority. I care less for the ignoring than I do for the willingness to ignore, and less for that than I do for the distortion and crippled presentation of a plan which, if carried out in a thoroughgoing manner, would be of incalculable benefit to the world and to science. The first volume of a similar collection and bearing the same title as this one was issued in 1896. Three of the following papers first appeared in a little volume entitled, "Suggestions to Medical Writers," copies of which are seldom to be obtained in the antiquarian book-stores. I thank the proprietors and editors of the following medical journals for their kind permission to republish articles first appearing in their columns: The "Inter-State Medical Journal," the "Journal of the American Medical Association," "American Medicine," "The Medical Standard," the "Quarterly Medical Journal," the "Johns Hopkins Hospital Bulletin," the "Montreal Medical Journal," the "Virginia Medical Semi-Monthly," the "Pedagogical Seminary," "The Jeffersonian," "The American Journal of Clinical Medicine."
