The general opinion of historians with regard to the racist ideology in the Italian "Defense of the Race" legislation (1938) is that it was the result of ideas quickly put together and used for propagandistic aims, in order to maintain independence from German racism. Contends that, on the contrary, Italian racism was a consequence of ideological processes extant prior to 1938 and that the Italian scientific world was not alien to a pro-racist campaign before that year. Italian racism cannot be seen just as an instrumental invention of fascism - it was supported by doctors, scientists, historians, demographers, anthropologists, sociologists, paleontologists, and theologians, all of whom worked on the Racial Laws not only because of opportunism but mainly due to real conviction.
