Antonio Rosmini (1797–1855) was a genius who combined science and sanctity. His contribution turns on the theory of the suspended middle of the original relationship between the natural and the supernatural, which he experienced and elaborated. The device of the relationship between the original metaphysical-affective-symbolic structure of the believing conscience and the affective turn in metaphysics, intrinsically linked to his trinitarian ontology, allowed Rosmini to elaborate theories and epistemologies from a unitary perspective in various fields of knowledge. This volume indicates the implications of the unbreakable bond between Rosmini’s philosophy and theology in disciplines such as pedagogical science, political science, and juridical science. Following the favorable resolution of the “Rosminian question” the Catholic Church beatified Rosmini in 2007 and in 2018 indicated his theoretical-practical approach as a universal education model to be followed. Through essays by major experts in Rosmini’s thought, this curatorship offers an international public a brief, reasoned overview of Rosmini’s thinking on these disciplines, finally translated into English, so that this perspective can be understood and explored with particular regard to the possibility of encouraging ecumenical comparison between Rosmini’s suspended middle and, for example, that of Radical Orthodoxy.

The history of the European oil and gas industry reflects local as well as global political events, economic constraints and the personal endeavours of individual petroleum geoscientists as much as it does the development of technologies and the underlying geology of the region. The first commercial oil wells in Europe were drilled in Poland in 1853, Romania in 1857, Germany in 1859 and Italy in 1860. The 23 papers in this volume focus on the history and heritage of the oil and gas industry in the key European oil-producing countries from the earliest onshore drilling to its development into the modern industry that we know today. The contributors chronicle the main events and some of the major players that shaped the industry in Europe. Durante l’età contemporanea rapporti tra la Chiesa cattolica e gli Stati europei sono stati spesso caratterizzati da forti tensioni, determinate dai percorsi con i quali le istituzioni religiose e civili hanno affrontato i processi di modernizzazione. Il profilo storico di Spagna, Italia e Francia negli ultimi due secoli è stato certamente delineato, seppur attraverso crinali differenti, dall’evoluzione dell’appartenenza religiosa dentro la modernità socio-politica e dal prendere forma di un articolato cammino di secolarizzazione. È questo lo scenario nel quale si collocano i ventuno saggi del presente volume, frutto di un gruppo di lavoro europeo composto da studiosi italiani, spagnoli e francesi. Gli studi permettono, così, di indagare in chiave comparata le dinamiche di interdipendenza che caratterizzano istituzioni civili, organizzazioni ecclesiali, movimenti laicisti e associazioni sociali, sia al loro interno, sia nelle loro relazioni. Sono ormai numerosi gli studi sulla ricezione dell’opera di Darwin da parte del mondo culturale dell’Ottocento, in particolare la sua influenza sul pensiero religioso. Da qualche tempo anche l’Italia è divenuta oggetto d’interesse: il darwinismo, il primo grande confronto scientifico-culturale seguito all’unificazione, colse il neonato Stato italiano nel pieno dell’impegno a costruire al suo interno una coesione sociale, in cui la cultura scientifica giocasse un ruolo centrale e surrogasse il collante di quella cattolica. È ancora gravemente miope, purtroppo, lo sguardo degli storici verso l’“altro cristianesimo” che in quegli anni si stava affermando in Italia: si tratta di quel complesso di movimenti di riforma evangelica che agitavano il nostro Paese e che, in simbiosi con il processo risorgimentale, aspiravano a superare lo Stato confessionale cattolico e a plasmare, attraverso l’educazione e il rinnovamento morale, le masse popolari e i nuovi cittadini italiani. Il volume si propone di superare questo deficit storiografico, indagando la pubblicistica evangelica del periodo e narrando, per la prima volta, il difficile confronto del protestantesimo italiano con la scienza dell’evoluzione: contrariamente all’opinione comune, in Italia si sviluppò un articolato dibattito filosofico e teologico, che attinse a informazioni scientifiche di prima mano e produsse una pluralità di opzioni, rivelandoci un affascinante, e ancora inedito, spaccato di storia del pensiero in Italia.
