This comprehensive guide includes the history of the Deerhound in the UK and the US, a discussion of the breed's characteristics and standard, a chapter on puppy selection, care and rearing. From the day you bring your puppy into your home through your Deerhound's senior years, this book guides you every step of the way. The author discusses house-training and obedience training as well as preventing (and solving) behavior problems. General maintenance, including feeding the Deerhound throughout his life, grooming and exercise, is carefully considered, as is the safety and preventive healthcare of the breed. Dr. Lowell Ackerman, in a special guest chapter, discusses the vital health topics that concern owners, including the selection of a qualified veterinarian, parasite control, inoculations, infectious diseases and more. For every owner of the "rough-haired greyhound," this new volume promises to be an invaluable resource for years to come.

This book (Scottish Deerhound) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

The Scottish Deerhound, or simply the Deerhound, is a large breed of hound (a sighthound), once bred to hunt the red deer by coursing. In outward appearance, the Scottish Deerhound is similar to the Greyhound but larger and more heavily boned with a rough-coat. The breed dates back to the 16th century and is known as the "Royal Dog of Scotland." The Scottish deerhound is an athletic, affectionate and loyal dog breed. With their playfulness and gentle dispositions, they make delightful companions and can be a great family pet. They also don't like being left at home alone for long hours of the day. These dogs need an experienced trainer who can stay firm and consistent. If you've got the strength and endurance to meet this breed's needs, you'll have a loyal, loving companion for life.

1. One of the tallest dog breeds, Scottish Deerhounds are also distinguished by their lean, wiry build. Their shaggy coat comes in a variety of colors, including gray, brindle, blue, fawn, and red. 2. They have a kind and mellow demeanor. They are recognized for their elegant and noble disposition. In general, they are kind to both kids and pets. 3. The Scottish deerhound has its roots in the Highlands of Scotland, where it was raised to hunt red deer. They've been around for centuries, and for the last few, the elite of society have relied on them for hunting. 4. The Great Dane is one of the largest canine breeds. Males normally range from 85 to 110 pounds (39-50 kg) and have a shoulder height of at least 30 inches (76 cm). Females are slightly smaller. 5. They require regular activity but are not hyperactive canines. In most cases, all that's required are a few long walks and a safe place to run outside. 6. The only way to keep their wiry coat from matting is to brush it often. The amount of hair they lose is average. 7. Health: Like other dog breeds, they might develop health problems like bloat and heart disease. Scottish Deerhounds are a beautiful and docile dog breed that is increasingly uncommon to find. If you have the time and room to devote to your pet, it will be a fantastic friend. Please elaborate if you were referring to a different term, and I'll do my best to answer your question
