"In the summers of 1978 and 1980, William W. Hallo directed two National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars, both of which had the title: 'Biblical History in its Near Eastern Setting.' These seminars, conducted at Yale University, have now resulted in two related collections of essays. This second collection, Scripture in Context II, had its origins in the 1980 seminar. Both seminars investigated in chronological sequence the major phases of ancient Near Eastern history and focused on the history, literary traditions, and religion of ancient Israel within the context of her cultural environs. A major concern was to recognize and explore the implications of the way in which the native biblical and extra-biblical literary traditions rendered account of themselves. The methodology followed in the seminars and the resulting essays is the contextual approach. This approach to the study of biblical history, literature, and religion is concerned not only to discover illuminating and insightful parallels between biblical and extrabiblical sources, but also to note and recognize the implications of significant and important differences."--Jacket.

Paul's Jewish background and his use of Scripture have been enduring interest within New Testament scholarship. This study contributes to this discussion by examing the presence and function of Scripture in I Cor. 1:18-3:23. The author examines the precence and function of Scripture in the form of six citations, two allusions, and seven echoes within I Cor. 1:19-3:23. From the examination of the function of these texts, this work concludes that Paul's use of Scripture agrees with its original context and stands in line with a majority of early Jewish tradition. Moreover, this study suggests that Pavi's use of Scripture also helps to chart a way through a difficult section of his writing.

The Proclamation of Jesus seeks to place Jesus in the context of first-century Palestinian Judaism. The authors hope to discern the essence of his preaching, his concept of the kingdom of God, and the place of purity in his teaching and activities. Better methods for assessing not simply the authenticity of reported sayings and deeds, but for tracing the development of tradition are considered. The authors are convinced that most of the Synoptic tradition is authentic, but that much of it has been reinterpreted and recontextualized. Herein lies the real challenge for those investigating the historical Jesus. The Proclamation of Jesus opens up new avenues of study and makes new proposals for understanding Jesus in the context of his place and time.

One of the most pertinent questions facing students of Mormon Studies is gaining further understanding of the function the Bible played in the composition of Joseph Smith’s primary compositions, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. With a few notable exceptions, such as Philip Barlow’s Mormons and the Bible and Grant Hardy’s Understanding the Book of Mormon, full-length monographs devoted to this topic have been lacking. This manuscript attempts to remedy this through a close analysis of how Mormon scripture, specifically the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, integrates the writings of New Testament into its own text. This manuscript takes up the argument that through the rhetoric of allusivity (the allusion to one text by another) Joseph Smith was able to bestow upon his works an authority they would have lacked without the incorporation of biblical language. In order to provide a thorough analysis focused on how Smith incorporated the biblical text into his own texts, this work will limit itself only to those passages in Mormon scripture that allude to the Prologue of John’s gospel (John 1:1-18). The choice of the Prologue of John is due to its frequent appearance throughout Smith’s corpus as well as its recognizable language. This study further argues that the manner in which Smith incorporates the Johannine Prologue is by no means uniform but actually quite creative, taking (at least) four different forms: Echo, Allusion, Expansion, and Inversion. The methodology used in this work is based primarily upon recent developments in intertextual studies of the Bible, an analytical method that has proved to be quite effective in studying later author’s use of earlier texts.

What is God’s perspective regarding women in ministry? Is gender a deciding factor in determining leadership roles in the body of Christ? Should women be silent in the churches? The answer to these questions along with many more regarding women in ministry are adequately addressed in this book. Without question, the subject of women in ministry continues to draw mixed conclusions across a broad spectrum of people. However, this book uses the proper context of Scripture to offer the true perspective concerning this provocative topic. Based on study, discussions, and inquiries, I truly believe this book is a comprehensive offering regarding the subject. I am persuaded that after reading this book, the outcome will be one thing: Freedom!

This work explores the relationship between religion, social patterns, and the perception of the character of scripture in four modes of Ancient Judaism: (1) the Jerusalem community of the fifth to fourth centuries B.C.E. (ie, the Early Second Temple Period); (2) the Judaism of the Graeco-Roman Disapora down to the end of the fourth century of the Christian Era; (3) earliest rabbinic Judaism in the second century C.E> in the land of Israel; (4) Late Antique Talmudic Rabbinism, primarily inn Babylonia, down to the sixth century of the Christian Era. Lightstone attempts not only to describe these perceptions and relationships but also to account for them, to explore why scripture should be thus perceived. His imaginative approach to the challenging descriptive and theoretical tasks is influenced by literary and form-critical methods as well as by the methods and perspectives of social anthropology and sociology of the mind. This unique attempts at revising the perception of the character of scripture should arouse the interest of scholars and students of Ancient Judaism.
