Tommaso Fiore ha speso la sua vita nella lotta al fascismo e alla corruzione del sistema giolittiano che, come una forma più sottile di violenza, colpiva le coscienze con il clientelismo e il familismo amorale causando la destabilizzazione della società civile meridionale. Teorizzava, direttamente dal pensiero di Carlo Cattaneo, un regionalismo “solidale”che avrebbe favorito gli interessi generali del Paese. Un federalismo lontanissimo da quello che viene tentato oggi con maldestri tentativi di depauperare le competenze dello Stato centrale in nome di un regionalismo contrassegnato da una visione particolaristica. L’animo di Tommaso Fiore si è formato con la cultura umanistica che porta al rispetto delle idee anche nella differenza di vita. Appresa negli anni degli studi classici, si alimentava soprattutto con lo studio di Tommaso Moro, dell’umanista Erasmo da Rotterdam, di Virgilio, di Russell, degli autori russi. Il politico Fiore si spende per i bisogni degli ultimi, ovvero i contadini e i braccianti del sud, praticando una lotta sindacalista tesa ad educare una coscienza di classe. Per questo riserva calorose parole all'amico leader sindacale Giuseppe Di Vittorio, simbolo del destarsi del proletariato agricolo pugliese: «Colui che più di tutti operò per ridurre a cittadini i selvaggi di Puglia, fu Peppino Di Vittorio che, con piena coscienza, ha fatto, per la redenzione del proletariato italiano e mondiale e per l'avanzamento di tutto il vivere civile» Per lo stesso motivo potrà avviare un proficuo carteggio con don Milani il cui umanesimo si fonda nel “Figlio dell’Uomo” che, con un amore universale, privilegia gli ultimi. Don Lorenzo Milani, di famiglia colta, è schierato con i montanari dell’Appennino tosco-emiliano; Tommaso Fiore, scrittore, politico, giornalista, laico, è schierato con i contadini e i cafoni del Mezzogiorno.

How Divine Images Became Art tells the story of the parallel ‘discovery’ of Russian medieval art and of the Italian ‘primitives’ at the beginning of the twentieth century. While these two developments are well-known, they are usually studied in isolation. Tarasov’s study has the great merit of showing the connection between the art world in Russia and the West, and its impact in the cultural history of the continent in the pre-war period. Drawing on a profound familiarity with Russian sources, some of which are little known to Western scholars, and on equally expert knowledge of Western material and scholarship, Oleg Tarasov presents a fresh perspective on early twentieth-century Russian and Western art. The author demonstrates that during the Belle Époque, the interest in medieval Russian icons and Italian ‘primitives’ lead to the recognition of both as distinctive art forms conveying a powerful spiritual message. Formalist art theory and its influence on art collecting played a major role in this recognition of aesthetic and moral value of ‘primitive’ paintings, and was instrumental in reshaping the perception of divine images as artworks. Ultimately, this monograph represents a significant contribution to our understanding of early twentieth-century art; it will be of interest to art scholars, students and anyone interested in the spiritual and aesthetic revival of religious paintings in the Belle Époque.
