This book surveys the development of the script from the earliest pictograph signs to the latest astronomical tables and the process by which it came to be used for writing many different Near Eastern languages. Sample texts show how the script is analysed into words and syllables and how to read the names of the most famous kings as they appear on monuments. In addition, extracts from contemporary Sumerian literature and school texts give an account of the training of the scribes, and the various types of inscription they wrote are illustrated. Il suo scopo è dunque didattico, poiché intende facilitare la lettura di testi, soprattutto in traslitterazione, spiegando in maniera essenziale come tale scrittura è nata, come si è sviluppata e quale ruolo ha svolto presso le varie civiltà del Vicino Oriente antico, da essa fortemente segnate. Esso intende fornire inoltre delle nozioni elementari sul suo “rendimento” con caratteri della scrittura “latina”, effettuato in due modi: come traslitterazione oppure normalizzazione / trascrizione. L’Autore inizia con una breve presentazione delle origini e dello sviluppo di questa scrittura, spiegando soprattutto i principi sui quali essa poggia: quelli grafici, ermeneutico-nozionali e funzionali. Nella seconda parte si offre un prospetto essenziale del modo usuale di rappresentare i testi originariamente scritti con segni cuneiformi, impiegando lettere dell’alfabeto latino e altri segni convenzionali.
